    .... my bold above

    Unhappily , I have installed KB3045171 .... if only I'd waited 2 more days !

I'll have to see if I can force the crash ..... I have had difficulties uninstalling some of these bad updates .

    hi
i'm thinking they are genius , to err is human, to persevere is an art
i start to think it's a strategy to sabotage w7 to push w8.1 and w10(near future release) market
can't understand they can't release One hotfixe without causing issues

While I am unable to use Windows Update on my Windows 10 laptop as I can't run any modern (metro) apps, I installed about 14 updates on my Windows 8.1 laptop to today. As expected, none of the updates caused any issues, and Windows booted again after rebooting to finish installing the updates. This is what always happens.

Hmmm ... a funny thing happened on the way to the jpeg yesterday, which may or may not be because of (Kolossal Bork) KB3045171. I regularly use several image manipulation programs on Win 7, including GIMP, Pinta, Paint.NET, PhotoFiltre 7 and FotoSketcher. I had opened a jpeg in FotoSketcher and was modifying the file/adding effects when the MP4 audio file I was listening to (a Kate Bush album) on the computer suddenly started to act strangely. It was almost like it was acting like a CD that had got stuck momentarily a few times. I've never had this happen before with an MP4 and the next thing I know the WiFi is offline and the computer seems to freeze, again momentarily. After a reboot all seemed well. I noticed here today about KB3045171 causing crashes when using drawing tools and even GIMP seemed to freeze on me earlier as well, which is unusual. So, I've removed KB3045171 and when it came back in Windows Update decided to hide it. Although I don't know the culprit was KB3045171 I've not had the problem repeat since. I'm beginning to suspect these half-baked patches are deliberate policy by M$ to make people upgrade from Win 7. I will eventually upgrade, probably to an iMac. I seriously don't regret buying a new Lenovo laptop preinstalled with Linux (Ubuntu) a few months ago.

I've been expecting some bad news about KB3045171 for a while.

Since I posted earlier ( #677 above ) I have been deliberately trying to make it crash something ..... with no success !
When it happens I guess it will be at the most inconvenient time possible ....

Windows Paint works fine , so does FastStone .... I played with the font and draw functions in both, but that's about as "artistic" as I get.

I did some more reading about KB3045171 and it's hooligan behaviour , and I found this , but I really don't have many apps that fit that description .
The suggested fix is to uninstall KB 3045171 and if that doesn't take care of the problem, to uninstall KB 3057110 also .

I'm reluctant to just uninstall it right now because I've had some real headaches doing this via Windows Update -> right click -> Uninstall etc

There is a command-line alternative to uninstalling Windows Updates , and I'm keen to try it .
I know I've got the details somewhere , but I can't find it right now .... I'll search more if anyone is interested.

Reminder: there is a hotfix available for KB3057110 and KB3045171.

Do you mean the cmd uninstall descibed here ? ................ (it's not just for the Win 10 updates in Win 7 but goes on to describe how to uninstall any MS patches)

To be honest , I'm really not sure ... I've definitely seen that ghacks article before ....
.......but there's something else at the back of my mind .... anyway ...

Reading it again , I can't see how that is any different to the Windows Update -> right click -> Uninstall option.
Surely that sequence just invokes the exact same Powershell commands that ghacks illustrates manually .... or not ? --- o_O

.... I chuckled when I saw which update he was actually uninstalling as an example ..... KB2952664 .... Ha !
    .... a notorious offender .

I'll do a bit more searching and post back

Thanks for the tip MrBrian , I will most certainly use it if I come unstuck.

For now , I'm going to continue brutalizing this thing until it crashes something ( or everything ) , it's got my curiosity , and it's irritating me !

I'm keen to duplicate the type of crash that Daveski posted about above .

Frankly , I have enough difficulty trusting Windows patches these days , so I'd have to put "patches of patches " low down on my confidence list :)

KB 3057110 was not installed but KB 3045171 was. Perhaps just a coincidence but, while using Irfanview, Windows decided to freeze a couple of times and had to push the power button. Therefore I have uninstalled KB3045171 now and will find out if that KB was the culprit next time when using Irfanview.

PS: KB3045171 presented itself again as an update and have it hidden for now.

EDIT: Windows knocked on the door again with 3 important updates:
KB2835361 - 2957503 - 3034344. I so hate this and want Windows to update only on Bork Tuesdays. That's plenty enough for me!!

.... or perhaps NOT ..... it seems to always be graphic related stuff where KB 3045171 really displays it's shockingly bad manners ,
.... and dismally poor pedigree :)

It's interesting you mention IrfanView because I downloaded the PortableApps version not long before I uninstalled KB3045171 and ran it off a thumbdrive to have a look at it. I have used the portable before a while ago. It froze a couple of times momentarily, I put it down to it being a portable. I can't get it to freeze now I've uninstalled KB3045171.

Not being personal, but glad that you posted that you also had problems with Irfanview. Thanks for posting Daveski17. So I decided to try Irfanview now after uninstalling the culprit and all went without a hitch. See:

You're welcome. I'm pretty sure that KB3045171 is a bit of a borker and is responsible for what happened to me in FotoSketcher. It also seemed to affect GIMP as well as IrfanView. I won't install KB3045171 again now.

I usually post a jpeg of all of my updates before they are installed. I usually wait 10 days to 2 weeks before installing. If I find any instances or reports of update borks I normally try to post them, although I'm usually beaten by someone who is more on the ball. Which isn't a bad thing.

I think that there are now 28 pages devoted to Micro$oft update borking kind of says it all.
