Bork Tuesday, Any Problems Yet?

Same here, have hidden it & will never install it

 

After reading this disturbing article at infoworld :-

"KB 2952664 triggers daily telemetry run in Windows 7 -- and may be snooping on users"

I decided to uninstall these 3 updates ...

KB2990214
KB2952664
KB3035583

After uninstall / restart , system stops at "Preparing to update ... do not turn off computer etc "
- with moving dot and spinning circle and stayed there for 35 minutes before my patience ran out.
I had to crash-out and restart manually.

On restart , " Windows update history " now tells me that I have never installed ANY updates despite the fact
that " Installed Updates" shows hundreds ( and exactly three less than before I uninstalled ).
There was also a large amount of network traffic in both directions.

It's almost as if MS were deliberately making update uninstalls difficult.... scare tactics ?
.... or just my paranoia

On browsing this thread again I came across this article at ghacks
so maybe I should have used his method instead of right-click -> uninstall from within Windows update.

Has anyone had similar problems ?

I came across this .... MicrosoftFixit50123.msi , but I'm reluctant to run it without more info....
.... it could just as easily be " MicrosoftBORKit "

 

Why? Microsoft already spying on us. They collect data they want by various ways. Dump files, errors reporting, sneaky patches hidden in mandatory updates etc. Believe that if they make this update optional, the data to be collected aren't of their high priority, otherwise they would do that silently as they do in other cases. I don't advocate them but it is a reality.

It wasn't so much that the update collects data that I didn't install it. I highlighted that aspect for other users to see.
No, I didn't install it because it is not of any use to me, and also given MS's recent recurrent Borking I will err on the side of caution.

Thanks for posting the link, I didn't realise you could use that method of uninstalling updates, I would have done the same as you.
I cannot specifically help with your problem though, because luckily, and with thanks to this thread I haven't installed any of the updates you mentioned.

Thanks Gordon for the explanation. It makes sense what you say. Unfortunately Wilders members are just a fraction of all Win users who usually install everything, so still they (Microsoft) possess enough information.

 

I had intended to uninstall them one at a time , starting with KB2990214 and I very nearly Borked myself with that one alone !

There are two things I hate doing
1. System Restore
2. Crashing-out ( ie holding down the power button )

To me it's like " throwing in the towel " .... an admission of defeat ( plus possible registry corruption ! )

When normality returned , I found that three updates had been uninstalled so I'm guessing
that there were dependency issues between them.
In future I will be using only the method described in ghacks to remove the other culprits on my Windows Update crap-list
.... I'll post back here if there are any problems.

Today's experience has convinced me that MS are very far from frank and accurate about describing the full content
and purpose of many of their updates.

Yes, sadly, I came to this conclusion a while ago.

 

Seems to be a continuing downhill slide... into who knows what...

 

Maybe, Patch Tuesday will come to an end...

Just did a back up. Now I'm ready for the "Borksters".

 

Woohoo! 65 updates for Windows 8.1 and Office 2013. If you don't hear from me for a couple of days you'll know something went wrong...

 

So far so good on two W7x64 machines.

 

Two of NET Framework 4 and 2 of NET Framework 3.5.1 failed with doing the updates. All 13 updates did take about an hour to download and install them.

So I tried to update the above four again and this time it was successful.

Win 7x64.

 

I got offered 21 for the same OS .... strange !
.... 20 " important " and 1 optional.

Due to recent experiences , I now regard them ALL as optional , regardless of what MS chooses to call them.

And some of them I think should be labelled as neither important nor optional , but poisonous.
For example this one , KB3022345 which is back again , even though I've hidden once already !

I updated 5 Win8.1 computers today. No problems. Interestingly, after I cleaned up, most OS partitions had more Free Space than before I started Windows Update.

about w7 , after KB3021952 and disk clean my update are broken , if i go under installed updated there is a mess
in short , after KB3021952 , i could not use anymore the disk clean

 

Started another machine with Windows 7... only updated .NET to 4.5.2, that little update called "Windows 7 SP1" approx 9mb, and an offline install of IE 10. The rest can sod off...

 

Oh well, bonkers borkers is with us again. I made an image three days ago, as usual. The 'Select the updates you want to install' legend always perplexes me; how about none?

I didn't spot that one marzametal , could you please post the Kolossal Bork number for that item ?

For now I have sent the whole lot of them to the Sin Bin ....
...ie "hidden" them .... and that's another , separate , gripe of mine ... some these abominations refuse to stay "hidden" .

A good example of this behaviour is the one that I mentioned earlier ; KB3022345 ...
.... it has already been told that it's not welcome , yet it still popped it's ugly head up again yesterday !

One of the many advantages of being on this forum is that there are brave souls who will install these things anyhow ,
and then post back on here to warn the rest of us ...

.... and I , for one , very much appreciate it !
