"False positives exist" is an understatement. There was hardly anything that didn't get flagged by QVM and yet Qihoo had best FP scores. Which is total BS.

If I understand correctly, you had hit with FP from Qihoo on your system.
Please provide file count on your system, and those flagged by QVM.
I want to know the percentage of FP? 95%? 99%?
I personally had about 50, all in whitelist, most are cheat engine and trainers and a dll from time to time. Which should be less than 1%, on almost 1.2TB of data, if my math is correct....

What kind of stuff you downloading? I can tell you I am using Security Essentials and there is a lot of stuff unless it was bad that didn't get flagged. I remember using Norton and they had a couple false positives too. Like someone said what company doesn't have them?

You know what I think would make everyone happy if Qihoo makes it possible to disable their engine. They should have done that to begin with and then we wouldn't have this war going on.

    Ya think?
I would think more productive would be "sensitivity" level low, medium and high, would solve some, if not all, FP problems....
But since all of it is being done server cloud side, I don't think we would get any control over it.
But it's a though to look into....

Half of the stuff from Steam folder, downloaded solely from Steam servers. And then it was bunch of GOG games components. And tons of stuff on retail games. And just bunch of random stuff. In the end whitelist was so long I just uninstalled it, because in the end it was me doing the decisions and not the AV. Which makes it pointless in my eyes.

Really? I do steam stuff as well, and I only have State of Decay, Tropico 5, This War of Mine, Cities Skylines, How to Survive, Space Engineers, X Rebirth, The Sims 4, Supreme Ruler Ultimate, Masters of the World: Geopolitical Simulator and Star Ruler 2. I might some day consider reporting those to FP division, but then again, it is no matter to me, I can do it manually.
Much more faster way to do it is to whitelist the whole Steam folder and being done with it :)

Which is something you should not have to do and this is what @RejZoR has clearly stated. You should not have to be whitelisting an entire folder just to keep using the same AV. If an AV is creating to many false positives then it has to go. It's all very well saying whitetlist the entire folder but for the average user they will just accept the anti virus's decision and delete anything it has said is malware.

You do realize that some programs and/or their components sometimes do have malware-like behaviour, which might get suspicious?
Still, I will work with Qihoo in whitelisting Steam games [at that particular location shouldn't be too hard] in the very near future.
It a fault of mine I didn't recognize how serious the issue really is.
Again, my mistake and will work on it to correct it.
Timeframe: not known at this time.

I don't use Steam so not going to help me. Only thing that is going to help is the ability to disable the stupid QVM engine but then might as well just use Bitdefender Free since that's the engine that has caught all the real malware I have downloaded to test and all the false positives have come from the QVM engine.

Many games these days have DRM that behaves very oddly and triggers several AVs heuristic/behaviour blocker technologies. Usually exceptions and fixes are rolled out by AV companies, but a new version of the DRM and it's the same story again.... :D

@tk55 I don't think the BD engine used in third party alternatives is dependant on the one in BD free.

When did BD get rid of their free version. That is news to me.

I just downloaded the install stub from BD's main site. So it is still alive.

I know. I just downloaded it today. I was just wondering why tk55 said it was no longer being provided.

I think it is no longer receiving product updates. But it still will get updated definitions.

The changelog at http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=40736 hasn't shown a new program update since 29 October 2013.
So they either don't bother posting changelogs any longer, or they're not updating the product, but only definitions.
Either way, that's not something I would be comfortable with.

@carbonize The lack of updates has been discussed here before. I just ran the downloader for the free edition, and the installer it downloaded has not been updated for 18 months or so.

I suspect the engine still gets updated even if the main program doesn't although I may be wrong. Could just be they see no reason to update the program since it works. Not like it actually does a lot. Has anyone asked them about it?

I first tried BD free after seeing it listed on https://www.raymond.cc/blog/comprehensive-list-of-free-anti-virus/ but it had issues as I mention in the comments there.

@carbonize I'm sure about the engine. I don't use Bitdefender as it as it slows down my computer too much.

@roger_m I never noticed any slowdown with the free version but I may install it later just to see what engine it is using. I mean surely it must use the same engine as they provide to Qihoo etc.
