Thanks for your reply, I just suppose that if your system won't boot Windows, your are good to use the recovery media, so I would keep the option checked too with a short delay, 3 or 5 seconds.

I bit the bullet and bought the 4-license Macrium option with the 20% discount coupon above. I have two desktops and two laptops so that worked out nicely. I must admit, Macrium is very well documented, feature-rich and quite intuitive, as well. The biggest selling point for me was Macrium's reputation for rock-solid reliability, something I found sorely lacking with Acronis where I had more than my share of restore problems when I was using it. All in all, I am quite happy. My search is over.

I keep the menu for that very reason - 2 seconds works fine for me.

Just to be sure : to modify the duration of the display of the boot menu is done through Windows as explained in a previous post here ? With V4 it was quite elaborate and I think I had to use Easy BCD or an equivalent with the assistance of Macrium Support.

Yes - on Win 7 it's in System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Startup and Recovery

MerleOne, I do not think you will be able to access that multiple boot screen if your system cannot boot, because that option is part of the OS and if there is a problem with your OS preventing your system from booting, you will never reach that options screen. The best you can do is F8 and it opens up some options to get you to boot into safe mode or your manufacturers provided recovery media, which is on a different partition unrelated to your OS.

So, I usually leave that option unchecked, so as long as I can boot into windows I can always use the combination of EasyBCD and iReboot to boot into any recovery media that I have previously configured, or otherwise if my system won't boot, I am forced to use a external recovery media, in this case Macrium Recovery Environment from a USB flash drive.

Good for you. But I think that within a few months the price of Macrium v6 will come down. I have decided to wait for that time. I am currently using Macrium v5.3 and it does whatever I need right now.

ok that makes sense if you use it that way.

By the way, I once read a few people on forums say that you should always create the image in the macrium environment boot not in Windows to ensure no file is in use By Windows and the image is 100%. IS that true? I've always don the image in Windows and never had issues that I could see anyway. Additionally, when creating the image through the Macrium Environment it takes about 5 times more time than when creating it in Windows.

Very well said, that's why I hide the menu because if my system ever reaches a stage where I cannot boot it's useless. Recovery media to the rescue

I take all my images in windows. I've always done it that way with Macrium and Shadowprotect, and have never had a single issue.

May I ask if this is the same in Windows 8.1?

I don't agree, I have seen (too) many times my XP system refusing to boot, giving a BSOD just before session opening, and Macrium Rescue Environment loaded fine even then. It really depends on why Windows won't boot. The only situation where both failed was when my hardware memory turned faulty.

MerleOne is correct. The DOS-like BOOTmgr (W7 or W8 ) screen occurs pre-Windows. The "touch sensitive" BOOTmgr window (fancy W8 BOOTmgr screen) requires a good portion of Windows to be loaded before it's functional. If Windows has a BOOTing problem... most likely it will not affect the BOOTmgr (unless your hardware is really funky or your on-disk image has been seriously wiped (zeroed, cleared, overwritten with total garbage, etc.)

Does anyone know if Macrium v6 will support Windows 10 released later this year?

I haven't tried it, but if I had to guess, I'd guess yes.

I was gonna purchase 1 license today, but glad I waited. I just used the 20% off coupon and bought the 4 pack, what the heck!

Yeah Macrium v5 Free never gave me a single problem with backups or recoveries. Figured it could only get better with v6 and why not give support by buying some licenses.

How about your opinion on Image for Windows? I have been having a very hard time deciding between Macrium and Image for Windows for a long time now. Macrium seems much easier to use but Image for Windows seems much more powerful. From what I see, both are extremely reliable as well. I am fond of Image for Windows licensing scheme though more than Macrium and I was never much of a DRM fan so that's one thing I was considering. But still, both of them seems so good.

There is a BIG difference between both : Macrium Incremental images are very fast whilst IFW are not at all. So speed is an issue here. I currently have a major issue with Reflect V6 on my PC but I would still recommend it because their support is very responsive. IFW's is also very responsive. I also admit Reflect protection scheme is annoying, IFW's is much more flexible.

Sure : Macrium relies on online activation so if you crash your PC without having removed the license you're good to contact their support. Worse, if the company gets belly up, you will never be able to activate non activated licenses (I have a 4-license pack, I just use one at the present time). No such thing wih IFW where there is no online activation (I suppose so). But like I said, MAcrium is unmatched in terms of speed and V6 add new features such as image management (merging, consolidating), there is also Rapid Delta Restore or something like that that makes restoration real fast (not tested yet on my system).
