    Andy,

I used the 32-bit Active@ BootDisk for the restore. It boots in MBR Legacy mode, not UEFI mode. But it still works.

Thanks Brian. Yeah for me the WinPe 32 bit a pain, because I have to boot twice for my mouse to work. But in the end it does work.

As Active@ DiskImage can be run in portable way if you want to boot from UEFI directly, you can put/integrate Active@ DiskImage 64bit to a UEFI based 64bit WinPE.

Can you briefly tell me how to run it standalone

Is Active@ Disk Image still being developed? It hasn't been updated for nearly a year.

just copy files from its installation directory and then copy to your USB drive(or anywhere). Booting from winpe and running it.

I really don't know that. Maybe no bugs, no updates for it. ADl is not lsoft's main selling app, you can see its data recovery updated more frequently

Good question. I managed to "find" Active Bootdisk for Windows Professional v2.01, which contains a "Active Disk Backup v1.02". This boot disk is based on Suse Linux and can boot under UEFI secure boot.
Brian if you would like, I can provide you this Boot Disk ISO for your test.

LOL I did mention before several times, that I did not use Active DI because they still don't have a 64 bit WinPE boot disk that supports UEFI secure boot.

Thanks. I remember I tried ADI 6.02 before but encountered some problems. Don't remember what problem I met, I only vaguely remember boot repair related.

There's a 6.0.3 version as well. It's in their "Active Data Studio 9". Let me look for the version and date...

I just tested what Andylau suggested. What I do is boot my Shadowprotect X64 recovery env. from USB 3.0. Super fast. From that I can of course restore SP. But using their file manager, I can also user IFW and Active@disk very easily. Just tested.

Peter2150: Nice, no? That's why I like those "Portable" imagers!
You can use Drive Snapshot "portably" as well (obviously, as it's just a single .exe), but even Acronis can be used Portable. It involves some trickery (copy and start drivers manually, and set some registry stuff), but it *can* be done!

Yep very nice. I've done with DS also. Trying to stick with programs that have passed brians test. I've tested SP in windows 10 and it worked but it's tricky as you restore a partition at a time.

    Pete,

I'd like to run my test on SP but StorageCraft have changed their download policy and I can't download a recovery environment without having a serial number. Did I read this correctly?

    oliverjia,

Thanks, but I've put Active@ DiskImage behind me as it passed the test. By the way, does Active@ BootDisk boot in your UEFI computer?

    Dear Brian,

It's not the regular Active BootDisk that can be downloaded directly off their website. It appears to be a new bootdisk called "Active LiveCD for Windows Professional", which is based on SUSE Linux. Yes it does boot correctly on UEFI secure boot computer.
The disk imaging tool included is called "Active Disk Backup", not Active DI. Strange that I could not find relative info off their website.

    Thanks Pete.

Can you help as I'm having trouble? I've booted the recovery CD and I'm running through the Restore Wizard. I'm on the "Recovery Volume - Select a volume to restore the backup image" window. It lets me select partitions on other HDs but I can't select the unallocated space on the new empty HD.

Right click on it and select either on of the create partition options. Remember you have to restore each partition separately. You might also try the option relating to recreate the disk configuration from the image. Besure to create them in the order you want them on the disk.

    oliverjia,

Can you boot legacy disks on your computer? Such as IFD, BIBM, Active@ BootDisk?

    Hi Brian,
Never tried booting legacy UFDs on my computer. I did use IFL which contains BIBM, but I only boot it in UEFI Secure boot mode.

I vaguely remember I had issues with Active Bootdisk with my computer last year - I seem to recall I ran Active DI from a third party WinPE x64 that boot in secure boot mode, and I could backup and restore using ADI. However the system wouldn't boot after restore.

Could this be the universal fix for Win 8.1 / UEFI / GPT backups? Just backup track 0 (normally 63 sectors) and after restoring the backup just restore track 0 additionally?

    Cheers
