Actually, this is quite disappointing when a current license is less that seven months old! Indeed, most software I've ever purchased seemed to provide major upgrades for at least one year.
see this is why im torn. this has now happened to me twice with macrium in the past. both times (an example is when they went from 4.0 to 4.2) i was expected to albeit at a discount BUY another newer lic. and the discount was not even that great then and now the prices are much higher. im worried i upgrade to the v5 now and then get the free upgrade to v6 then v6.2 or something comes along and im expected to pay again. this alone is the only thing keeping me deciding if i should buy the upgrade right now. imo any v6 releases should be included and i would understand if v7 came along more than a year or so later and they asked us to upgrade. please dont get me wrong macrium works and works amazingly.
Bought v5 three years ago. Have had free updates ever since. Compared that to Acronis when you're lucky if you get 2 bug fix updates for the given year release (after that spend money again). So in my case, they definitely provided value.
for some reason they did not do that with v4. now it seems you get free updates but only for one year correct? or am i wrong?
Zfactor, you say above... "please dont get me wrong macrium works and works amazingly. This is the thing I don't understand about many users. They purchase a product which does exactly what they expect it to do and it usually does it in a very reliable way. Then along come bug fixes, usually in the current version, and the users feels he has to upgrade just because there's an upgrade available. If the version in use has no flaws as far as the user is concerned... why upgrade. If the version in use has a flaw which is identified as being fixed in the upgrade... go for it. But to upgrade for upgrade's sake doesn't make any sense, to me anyway. The potential for adding something "new" (a bug) to an already existing reliable product is always there when an upgrade is done. I guess my problem is that I'm logically and statistically driven... if it ain't broke, why fix it. Along comes a new major version, which in most cases offers some type of new major functionality. If the user feels he can really use that functionality... go (and pay) for the upgrade which includes that new functionality. If the user doesn't need the new functionality (many in this forum only COLD image/restore their storage... they would have no use for RDR, for example), they have no outstanding reason to purchase it. As Marc has said, most bug fixes within a release have no cost associated with them (I'm not familiar with the v4 to v4.2 scenario... I'm a reasonably newbie Macrium user) and they shouldn't have. The vendor is repairing flaws in a product you have already purchased and it should be offered FREE to existing folks with licenses.
http://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50138.aspx Same version updates (for example 5.x to 5.x) are free for life. Major upgrades (for example 5.x to 6.x) are chargeable but with an upgrade discount.
Well that was strange! Properties of the setup file were v5.9.241.0. Install began with my current v5.3 license embedded. Download and installation quite normal until finished and launched. Then shows version as being, yep, you guessed it, 5.3!
I just opened my V5.3 and was given a patch to V5.3.7277. Why would they offer V6 while they're still patching V5?
I look forward to hearing how things are going with V6, I am very glad to see that it is now in the hands of testers.
well its installed and running testing it now. we will see what happens. so far not to much seems different im making a baseline now on my test machine

when you run the installer it asks you which version to download. i have the pro version running on my test machine. im about to test the snapshot restore. shows up as v6 for me in the about section build no. 453
Well inital tests in VM, look good. I don't at all like the "incremental" stuff. It only seems to do one increment a day, with a retention schedule. If that is really correct, it doesn't come close to completing with ShadowProtect. On the other hand the rapid restore looks really cool, if not implementation is bit clumsy. On my VM full restore took about 11 min. Rapid reatore took only two. I tested then by deleting all my security software, and doing a restore. Worked perfectly. Only thing I didn't like on the restore was all the icons and stuff were messed up. Shame you can't test with incrementals. As a trial it installs v6, but if you put in a v5 license key you get v5. For me key will be what they charge to upgrade.
