Thanks Pete for the explanation. So I guess in my case I don't really see the need of AX64 TM as restore speed is not important. Also as "TheRollbackFrog" is saying, and it is my case, my system is loaded with a SSD and complete imaging restore is fast enough.:)

Yep, if you have a small c: drive, and fast ssd, I'd agree.

A, just make sure your Macrium FULL/DIFFERENTIAL/INCREMENTALs are on a separate physical drive from your OS partition. People have gotten caught up in the euphoria of a DUAL (or more) partitioned SSD and imaging between partitions... it's VERY fast. BUT... what happens when that SSD takes a permanent vacation?

Enjoy the speed... just be careful with the configuration and enjoy the feeling of being fully protected, especially against yourself  (I am usually my own worst enemy when it comes to configuring my system)

To those of you who use both Macrium and Ax64 Time Machine...

since Time Machine does a back up every hour, what do you do when you are doing a Macrium backup...assuming that it takes more than an hour. Do you postpone the Time Machine backup while the Macrium backup runs?

My Initial Macrium backups take 16 Minutes. My Incremental backups are only about 2. Not an issue

Peter...does your initial full backup only take 12 minutes with Macrium? (not sure if I have the time right because I can't see your post and don't know how to copy it). How big is your hard drive? When I had to do a full with Ghost 15, it took about 6 hours.

If my backup takes more than an hour, how would I use Macrium with Time Machine? They both can't run at the same time can they? Would I have to pause Time Machine until Macrium was done? And will that affect Time Machine backups? Will it force Time Machine to do a new base full backup?

And how do both programs work along that line? With Ghost, you would create a full backup and then it would create incremental backups for 3 months and then it would want to do a new full backup. Of course sometimes something happened and it would want to do a full backup before the 3 months expired.

    Thanks

I assume your response was to my initial post. I typed Peter's name, but then somehow posted. Then I had to edit the post and add what I wanted to ask. Hope you can see it now. I can.

Kev, both of these applications use the Windows VSS (Volume Shadow Service) by asking for a LOCK prior to them doing their thing. What I don't know is whether Windows will allow a 2nd LOCK request while the 1st is in progress. This is tricky for Windows. When the 2nd LOCK request was fielded by Windows, it would need to keep the original LOCK in place while the 2nd requester was using the file structure and, in addition, it would need to lock the dynamic cache instituted by the 1st LOCK request then start a secondary dynamic cache to use during the 2nd LOCK period. Like I said, it seems tricky to me. If I were Windows I would deny the 2nd LOCK request until the 1st has been released, but there's a possibility it's supported.

In any case, nothing should break as a result. The worst that would happen is the AXTM AUTOMATIC snapshot will fail for not receiving the granted LOCK request by VSS... it'll try again when it's ready.

Right now my c: drive is about 91gb. A full image with macrium takes abut 16minutes, and incrementals take about 2 minutes. I do the full image about once every two weeks.

Once you do the initial full backup with Macrium, do you have to have the drive attached at all times so that it will be able to create an incremental backup? What I mean is...If it's not attached, will it forget what has changed and need to create a full backup? And for the people who use Macrium and Time Machine, do you use the same drive for backups from the two programs?

I just bought Maricum Relfex today. I like it better than Norton Ghost and Acronis True Image from what I have seen so far. Much simpler and faster to load.

I also found out how it works with Ax64 Time Machine. My full Macrium backup took over an hour to create. When it came time for Time Machine to run it's backup, I opened it to see what would happen. It created it's incremental backup at the same time that Macrium was creating it's backup. It did slowed Macrium down for the few minutes it takes. But both backups completed without any problem.

Before I installed Macrium, I uninstalled True Image from one machine and Ghost from the other. The True Image uninstall was uneventful. But the Ghost removal was a little scary. It started out with the usual progress bar and then command prompts keep opening and closing. Most of the windows were empty. I assume they were closing before what ever they were opened for could be written to them. I saw a few with writing in them, but they went by to fast to read. I did see VSS in one of them. Then the progress bar finished and then another progress bar opened by more of the same. And then if I'm not mistaken, there was a third. Finally it told me I needed to reboot my system in order for the changes to take effect. I said OK and held my breath while I wondered if my system would be OK. It took longer to load the first time but it seemed to be OK and there were no error messages. Thank goodness.

Yes, you need to have a drive attached, but if you don't have it attached when it comes time for Reflect to do the backup, it will do it when you plug it in.
For some reason, Reflect doesn't require "Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed" selected in Task Scheduler.

I guess that Reflect service is taking care of it.

    Just a Question:

System here is Win7 SP1 Ultimate 32bit, stand alone machine, no networks.

I want to try out Macrium Reflect Pro but I am not certain which version to use.
    It comes in 32bit and 64bit, Win7, 8, 8.1.

When using a bootable CD, does it matter which version to use?

The free and standard versions are also quite good.

Can someone upload a direct link to this version please? "v5.3.7256_reflect_setup_free_x64.exe"
The download via installer keeps timing out... grrrr

EDIT: Never mind, it was only a 52mb file, the installer said to expect 169mb or something... where to get the PE tools from?

When you build the PE you want, it will download what you need.

I'm intrigued. I like the grandfather-father-son (GFS) automation and the rapid delta restore.

Just curious... do we have any Macrium Reflect Pro v6 BETA users on the forum? I have a quick question...
