Are on demand av scanners worth the trouble? By the time they detect problems, is it already too late?

Yes it's too late. I'm using 3 OD scanners. Emsisoft Emergency Kit, MalwareBytes AM & SuperAntiSpyware.

Isn't a good idea to be alerted about the problem than to have whatever running happily on your system undetected?

Exactly why would you leave an infection running?
You have to cut it out.

The way I use them (on average every 3 months) is usually for a second opinion (HitmanPro, MBAM), if they detected something I would restore a clean image, I could never trust the cleaning/repairing abilities of any AV. I do it for my peace of mind really as nothing has ever been detected in more than 7 years of using sandboxing/virtualization layers of security.

It's not too late if you scan before executing the download. But now, with VirusTotal's ever-increasing 128 MB limit, I'm finding less and less use for them.

Thanks, what I should have asked...if your av misses virus/malware/etc... and using an on demand scanner as a second opinion... detects it and removes it or quarantines it...is the damage already done by that point?

Depends how it's executed. Some you just to be on the page & it deploys. Some just a mouse over. Some just a download without opening/running.

Wow 128 MB, it's good to know thanks. I have always skipped VT thinking it was only limited to 10-20 MB...

On-demand scanners consist just another layer of protection; not my primary layer of protection though.

I have Panda 2015 free as my av, MBAM free 2.0.4 as my on demand anti malware scanner. Is MBAM SCANNER good for virus scanning as well as malware scanning or would Panda cloud cleaner or emmisoft do better in addition to MBAM? Also, is Panda cleaner needed if Panda 2015 is your av? Don't they do the same job except one has real time protection. Hopefully your input will help me to decide...Thanks

I always like ClamAV on-demand. Clam picks up some really odd stuff sometimes, and seems to sniff out packed malware. Always handy to have it on right-click IMO.

Since you use Panda (Real-Time), I would stay with Emsisoft Emergency Kit and HitmanPro.

If too late, then what purpose do they serve besides a false sense of security?

  20. Chrome extension Secure Downloader scans downloads with Virus Total automatically ==> no need for addiional AV's

HerdProtect scans running processes and vulnerable files with Virus Total ==> no need for addiional AV's

Process Explorer scans running processes and dll's (lower panel view) with VirusTotal ==> no need for addiional AV's

CrowdInspect scans internet connections with VirusTotal and checks on injected dll's ==> no need for addiional AV's

Excellent info as usual, thanks. The odd thing is that Secure Downloader finds CrowdInspect suspicious...

Hi ufakai, peace of mind when not running a real time AV and relying on sandboxing,HIPS,BB,LV etc. It`s good now and again to run a scan just to see that yet again there`s nothing on the system.

    Regards Eck:)

One problem for those automatic VT checker is most of them only checks last reported results, so if it turned out that it is actually malware after last scan you won't be alerted. SecureAPlus address this by continuous scanning by 12 AV engines.
