In the less recent past (more than a few months ago), Firefox crashed rarely - maybe 0 or a few times a year. In recent months, Firefox crashes a few times a week. I don't know if Firefox itself is to blame, because I use many Firefox extensions, use Microsoft Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit Firefox mitigations, etc.
EMET definitely causes it to crash. It might be time for a new profile if you are having excessive issues. I have not had many crashes unless I have EMET installed, but I decided it was more trouble than it was worth. I also try to keep the number of extensions to a minimum. Overall I am finding it (Firefox) more stable than it was a few months ago.
Are you referring to crashes in which EMET purposely crashed a Firefox-related process (i.e. an exploit false positive)?
One of the things that sometimes triggers a crash recently is saving a webpage image via context menu "Save Image As...." Anybody else experiencing this?
If it is purposely crashing it then it is not telling me so. I don't think that is the case. Seems to be when I visit a site that uses Flash. And the "Save Image As" situation... I have seen it before but not recently. Fixed it by creating a new profile.
You can see all your Firefox crashes in about:crashes (unless your cleaning software deletes them). Usually though it's a bad extension, plugin or over protective security software (hello EMET!)
Using about:crashes, around half of my crashes in the past month occurred in emet.dll. I'm using EMET 5.1.
I notice no change between lately and further back. Firefox very occasionally will hang up in memory and freeze on me mostly when flash crashes. Otherwise, it's been great.
I had a phase of Firefox 3 crashing on me, but it was almost certainly a dodgy extension. I don't recall Fx ever crashing on me running in Linux. On Windows, for me anyway, Fx crashes rarely and if it does it is usually an add-on/extension incompatibility, often after an update. Lightbeam caused the last problems I had and uninstalling it solved the issue. According to about:crashes that was 31/07/2014 at 18:45! The only browser I have never known to crash is Maxthon.
I use an older version of FF and it rarely crashes unless it gets overloaded with some sloppy pages..
I won't vote, as ordered (as I use v27.0.1), but it may be wise to consider the words of those who continue to use older versions. After all we can give you the info. regarding it's crash rate in real time, as we're experiencing it right now. We don't have to rely on memories... which can tend to fail us, or even be biased/skewed for certain reasons. This version never crashes for me. I literally cannot recall a single time. Then again it may not be any coincidence that it was also right around the time I abandoned Flash altogether for HTML5... as I see others pointing to that reason. Otherwise I may not have connected that. So I think it's good to combine the outlooks of the old with the current and cross-reference. I have used newer versions of it, so it's not like I'm oblivious to them. IMHO the newer versions are less stable and less responsive. It certainly seems to be more stable without Flash, before & after. Before, along with a good config. & maintenance pretty much worry free in fact. I open it... I use it... I close it... Sandboxie uses CCleaner to delete it's contents... and then it's gone until I open it again. Rinse... repeat. I cannot even recall the last time I encountered a problem. Actually I can. It was called version 29...
I'll be watching a video and the screen becomes black and unrecoverable. Does this happen to anyone else?
