i had qihoo installed on my friends computer, he picked up a virus/malware which qihoo picked up, ilivid , it quaranteed it, but the computer still ran really slow. I ran malwarebytes, which found nothing, so i put on webroot, which did find more files, but still the computer ran slow, i reset internet explorer, which sorted that, but i did need to manually go into the registry and find the remnanats of ilivid, is this what should happen, could the vendors not introduce something to do this , a lot of people are not computer literate and can do this, i never used to i just used to reformat the computer as it was the better option.
The said computer is now running great, so a bit of digging in the registry has worked.

I hate Crapware! I don't get any but when I clean systems of Customers well we all know it's full of PUA's/PUP's.

I always clean crapware not viruses from clients I get. They should make an Anti Crapware program not anti virus as that's more targeted now, BAIDU PC FASTER, SPEEDUPMYPC, etc

It's nuts and way out of control I use Adwcleaner, Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro then I install WSA and they stay clean but some of the Crap I never even heard of it's like back a few years ago when it was Fake AV's and Malwarebytes was called Rogue Remover, now it's PUA's/PUP's and Ransomware.

Here's the thing bro, I get a PC, format it, install all Windows updates, install MVPS Hosts file + AdBlock Plus + a good AV, make sure everything is top notch, enable PUP detection, then a week later, I get that PC infested with crapware, they're usually the same..... BAIDU crap, Clean My PC, SpeedUpMyPC, search protect, etc........

AV companies should treat PUPs and these things even more dangerous than a virus IMHO and not just have a button which says PUP allow / disallow coz these illiterate people will just click allow anyway

AV's should have implemented PuPs a long time ago. And keep on it like they do virus signatures or cloud. They don't put forth the effort into Pups like they should..

Yeah I really would like if more AVs would get far more aggressive in their detection of these PUAs. ESET does a fine job in detecting and removing them, but some AVs don't seem to worry too much about them, not to mention the Users negligence etc. I wonder how effective in prevention Unchecky has proven to be.

Raptor- A couple of things- You list SpeedupmyPC and Baidu PC Faster as being problematic. Actually these applications in themselves aren't the issue, instead it's that Uniblue (SpeedupmyPC) packages a third party installer that does install annoying crapware; the issue with the Baidu product is that it has been co-opted by adware companies who package PC faster with their own 3rd party junkware installers (Although I would never use PC faster, it in itself is totally innocuous and can be removed easily).

Second, Comodo Firewall (HIPS off, Sandbox on) can be seen to be proof against the installation of Junkware. A multi-junkware installer (like the Uniblue package or iLivid) will be sandboxed along with the multiple instances of PUP's that are installed. Reboot, and the system is cleaned. Magic.

I haven't use those utilities and never will. Anything that claims to magically fix or clean my PC (except CCleaner) gets thrown out the window. Pure snake oil and will probably do more harm than good.

To comment on what you said, maybe they aren't bad as you say, but to me, as someone who fixes PCs, these computers come super extremely slow,,,,same effect a virus would do.....you know your computer isn't acting right.... so that's what it is, since they install crapware as you said, to me, the person repairing, the problem lies in THEM...... I don't know what they installed, but they caused the client and in turn......me...... the problem...

I have added BAIDU to my MVPS hosts file.......anything that has the word BAIDU to me is a virus....Baidu Browser, Baidu PC Faster, Baid AV! heck, I don't know how anyone in his right mind would run an AV from a company that bundles crapware

It is, like others have said, when I clean computer for clients, it's mostly PUP's and PUA's. PC Faster, Baidu and all sorts of garbage.

Totally agreed, and to stop this, I really hope all AV companies include these programs in their signature.......now just a popup message that says this may be dangerous (allow/disallow)......no.....I mean block it completely and deny access as if it were a virus.......

but I think I am being too optimistic.......maybe.....for legality issues......AV companies can't block them since they do offer the program they promised to install.....albeit......with crapware that will make your computer slow or behave erratically.

you'd strike a home run if that happens. ive seen pcs with the best AVs installed on em but were almost useless due to the damage the PUPs have done. I cannot even count how many PCs that had Kaspersky AV installed and were infested with em. Why? because KAV by default doesn't detect PUPs!

If Webroot really does take PUPs seriously they'd be the first AV.....

at the end of the day, I or anyone else want to install an AV and be protected, doesn't matter where or how it comes from, people don't wanna be smart all the time or perhaps just aren't, we wanna install it and forget it......

but this is only wishful thinking.....
