I refuse to use mail-in-rebates, a relic of the 1980s. Why do they still do this, and at least not offer an online rebate form? I paid $20 more for a 780GTX graphic card because I refuse to mail in rebates. To me it's worth the $20 rather than the hassle of mailing things, and then the stress of wondering if it will arrive, and then the added hassle of driving to the bank to deposit it.. Ridiculous.
"TAX ON THE DISORGANIZED. Why the rage for rebates? The industry's open secret is that fully 40% of all rebates never get redeemed because consumers fail to apply for them or their applications are rejected, estimates Peter S. Kastner, a director of consulting firm Vericours. That translates into more than $2 billion of extra revenue for retailers and their suppliers each year. What rebates do is get consumers to focus on the discounted price of a product, then buy it at full price. "The game is obviously that anything less than 100% redemption is free money," says Paula Rosenblum, director of retail research at consulting firm Aberdeen Group. http://www.businessweek.com/stories/2005-11-22/the-great-rebate-runaround Companies count on the consumer to forget to mail in the rebate.less than 40% of consumers actually take advantage of rebates. Rebates often ask for many pieces to fulfill the rebate, which if not followed, could lead a denial of a rebate. Most likely when sending out your rebate, you can become victim to your information being sold to third parties. To ensure the product is kept and used. Most of the time, a store will not return a product without a UPC in tact or an original receipt. It’s an easy tool to draw people in to make a purchase. It takes a long time, for the most part, for manufacturer’s to send out the rebates. It’s very typical for the fine print to read that it takes 9 – 12 weeks to receive the rebate. This allows the company to hold the money longer to earn extra interest before having to release their funds. While it may not seem like much, after thousands of units are sold, it could become substantial. Also, rebates are typically handled by third parties, so there is additional processing time that could result in a delay of a rebate. http://stupidcents.com/seven-reasons-why-companies-offer-rebates/
I prefer to patronize companies that don't rely on statistics to ensure they make money on forgetful customers, or data mining via them.

lol i do rebates ALL the time i have yet to ever have one not be filled. i make sure to get everything ready and make sure its very clear on the paperwork i even include extra paperwork most of the time as well as a second photocopy of the upc and rebate form. if i ever did have one not be filled i dont remember it.
I'll be honest. I don't do them because I'm one of the 40% that forgets about it or simply doesn't do it.
I'm like you - I used to document everything very carefully - and most of the time there wasn't a problem, but I have experienced a couple of occasions where vendors simply refused to pay the rebate. It's fraud really, but unfortunately there's not much you can do about it. I just decided to avoid rebates after the last incident. It's often possible to get the same, lower price with a little research.
Indeed it is... I found a 'dented box' GTX 780 for the same price as the rebate one. Who cares about a couple of dents in the outside of a box if I can avoid rebate nonsense? I won't ever do a rebate again, too much work, and too many have disappeared into the abyss, and I don't want to be data mined. One of the reasons Blood Glucose Meter firms give the meter for free with a rebate is so they can build a database of people with diabetes, and then from that point on you are known to have diabetes with virtually every data mining firm in existence. It's all a scam really. (disclaimer, I'm not diabetic, but my mother is, and we found out they used these rebates to datamine her by using slightly changed credentials on the form)
I anticipate more deals for AV's/Suites that are for 2014 in the coming days and weeks. For the PC downloads, wouldn't that (obviously) include a free upgrade to the 2015 version? Or is it different for each vendor?

Being subjective it detects some, and that setting has to be enabled because it is unticked by default. Really can't say anything more than that because then I would have to compare.
Where is the checkbox for PUP/PUA? The reason I ask is simple, my daughter is a master at PUA/PUP infections. I find Norton keeps her system clean because of the reputation/insight aspect of it, but most other AV's she gets horribly overrun with PUP/PUA infections to the extent I simply reformat it. So far Norton has kept her 100% clean. If Kaspersky is 'reasonable' with PUP detection, and has a reputation system now, I might consider it for some family/friends, and snag some cheap licenses. I think close to 70% of infections these days are PUP/PUA, possibly more, and many of those staddle the line between unwanted app, and malware.
