I used FoolDNS before, but got sick of the FP's which are very difficult to fix (you need to request whitelisting via a business account). Now, it depends on my device: uBlock for Windows/Chrome OS/elementary OS, AdAway for rooted Android, FilterProxy for stock Android, and Light Untrusted Hosts Blocker for iOS.
You didn't get my meaning because you thought i meant basic and generic DNS filtering as business bog standard routers are limited. I didn't mean simple DNS conventional blocking. It is possible to load linux scripts into parts of the router firmware which can then download an upto date Adblock script. So blocking nytimes custom links is possible due to the filtering being in the hands of Adblock. I think you mean a list of addresses as with the Zyxel routers, not as comprehensive as a good filter list. Admucher is faster it is filtering by blocking the relevent addresses. Blocking inside the browser with a extension is slower due to javascript, filtering expressions and search pattern matching.
I use a few different apps/extensions on my computers... Adguard Premium/Standard/Extension uBlock AdBlock Edge Custom Hosts File PeerBlock
Since Pale Moon released their v 25 I had to switch to Adblock Plus Pseudo Static to have the icon shown. Thus Adblock Edge in Fx and ABP PS in Pale Moon for now.
This is correct. I layer Adblocking at the UTM/Router level, and even then it's not comprehensive, as these companies tend to be very conservative so they don't break anything. My first layer is Commtouch/Bluecoat databases, second layer is Untangle's Adblocking engine which I believe is based off a very simplistic set of URLs/Cookies from Easy-List - only about 15,000 entries. Admuncher while decent, doesn't cut it for me. It can often break pages (IMO), but also ignores HTTPS. Adguard Stand Alone I am waiting for the rewrite as my benchmarks show it as being much slower. SO for now I use a combination of router level blocking w/adguard extension.
Thanks for all the recommendations on Adguard. Really loving it. Any deals on the lifetime subscription by chance?
I've never tried Adguard on Android, and I won't until they change what they write on their Google Play site: Well, Adblock Plus (with root permissions) filters the complete traffic which means that it also blocks ads and tracking in other apps. I consider this important.
But this is not DNS filtering but pattern-based filtering, IMHO. With pattern-based filtering it is possible to block ads like that one I mentioned, of course. And scripts are also needed to this, and so I wonder if that's really faster.
hmm.. ok. When am on kitkat and before, i had tried but it did not work for me. Not able to filter the ads on the browser. Though it used to update its filter database properly. Not sure if i did anything wrong at that time. Adguard does not need any hacks to work on, though it is only for browsers as you noted. It works even well on lollipop too, and no pain in setting it up
ok thank you. i have reviewed link 1 at that time. but not the second one. maybe in future i will take a look at it. At that time it even messed with the proxy. had to manually set back the configuration for wifi. (not a big thing though...) Does it have any additional filters apart from Easylist, or is it the same thing.
Still using AdGuard paid...I gave Ad Muncher free a try and found it broke some sites I use on a regular basis....I find AdGuard superior because its more intuitive and its frequency of updates better, all in all along with a superb customer service its the winner for me.
I have Lifetime Licenses of Adguard for 4 computers. Haven't had any problems, working good. I paid for a license from Ad Muncher (1 year) which expires this coming January. I dumped AM after about 2 months into using it for the many reasons posted. As for me the money spent for Adguard is an investment well spent. Excellent Customer Service and @avatar is an excellent representative for Adguard. Compare both Forums, Adguard & Ad Muncher and comments on Wilders. I'm very satisfied with Adguard.
