"Existing commercial forensics tools can still dump 3rd party app data, camera reel, video, and recordings from iOS 8"

In addition, this only physical; Apple still has the decryption keys for iCloud.

I don't think it's real. If Apple want to make money in the US, then they'll have to obey the government laws. Simple as that. Technology is a ~ Snipped as per TOS ~, every entity can ~ Snipped as per TOS ~ it to serve its purpose.

Is this new encryption technology just for the Iphone6 or also for any other Iphone (like 5S) running on iOS8?

As I understand it, iPhone 4 cannot be upgraded, but higher numbered iPhones and devices can. I don't know for sure how true or accurate this is however.

Lets face it, if Apple are telling the truth it is just a matter of time before Government passes legislation. Vendors will be forced by law to implement backdoor access and they will make it illegal for citizens to use encrypted communications.
We live in a society where so many of it's citizens are stupid, all the government has to do is say terrorist, or pedophile or drug dealer, and they will all wave their flags and cheer for big brother.

This is smoke. There is no such thing as keeping any digital online data unavailable to 3 letter agencies. Except for 0.1% or less your data is their data. Then if detected the 0.1% are heavily investigated.

What is the effect of phone encryption is the phone is stolen? Does encryption render the phone useless to the people who stole it?

Not really, they could just wipe it and keep the phone itself.

'Fraid I don't actually see the significance of this since they have the metadata the phone communicates anyway, or can get the keys from any cloud service or app for content.

It's presumably easier/lazier to suck the content off any phone they get their hands on in the course of an arrest (which is what I understand they've been routinely doing anyway), but it's not as if the communication data and metadata isn't available to bulk or targeted surveillance however encrypted the phone is.

That only leaves locally derived contents/pictures, but in that case, the device is no different to any other camera or computer.

So the arguments simply don't stack up.

    See: last lines of http://lavabit.com:

    START QUOTE:
" I would _strongly_ recommend against anyone trusting their private data to a company with physical ties to the United States.

    Sincerely,
    Ladar Levison
    Owner and Operator, Lavabit LLC"
    END QUOTE

In other words, Apple is FORCED by law to make it possible to hand over data , just like any other USA based company is.
For me it is never become clear why all the passwords on any Apple platform had to be stored on a central place (Keychain)
Apple was named explicitly by Snowden in the PRISM revelations.

It is nice that all the USA based companies that were named by Snowden are making a lot of noise about installing Encryption, the fact of the matter stays as mentioned above, and that they still are able to read your passwords and that they still only use AES 256 for encryption.
