It is just a marketing decision. They also skipped Office 13. As I check the Windows version from a command prompt on the Windows 8.1 I am running, it says Windows 6.3. Names mean nothing. Other companies do this. If Apple did it people would say it was marketing genius.

Agreed, the name is marketing and should be ignored. From Paul Thurrott:

    http://winsupersite.com/windows/microsoft-announces-windows-10

One platform, not one user experience. Answering the obvious questions about scaling one system across such diverse platforms, Myerson was quick to point out that the platform was consistent but the user experience would vary. The same team—led by Joe Belfiore—is working on the Windows 10 user interfaces for phones, tablets and PCs, he said. It's a single product family with one store, and experiences that are tailored for each device. He called it "Microsoft's most comprehensive platform. Ever."

Time will tell how well this is implemented, but this is the kind of flexible concept I was hoping for.

Leaving Metro and touch stuff in the OS on a totally non-touch desktop or laptop machine for one thing.... Many have screamed about this for ages. Ignored by MS.

They're trying to develop a unified user interface for ALL devices.

Microsoft screwed the pooch with Windows 8 which presented anything but a user-friendly unified UI.

The company has a lot of work to do before Windows 10 is available for widespread adoption.

I doubt it too. I prefer the Metro Start Screen.

Surprised at the negative reaction. For me, I'm really excited and will be installing the preview on my pc's tomorrow. New Windows versions (even previews) are always faster, just as stable, and free. What's not to like, plus it looks great so far with real usability enhancements.

And Sinofsky is gone, this isn't the same closed minded MS that gave us Win 8.

I have never got the hang of why a vendor/developer chose to skip a number like this. It's just weird, someone should clarify to them that the number will go up naturally with each release. Are they in a hurry or what :isay:

If you look at it like that yes, but if I ask someone what OS you use do they say Win 8 or Win 6.2. "now we have released Win 6.2...but you can call it Win 8." Try go into a store and say you want to buy a PC with Win 6.2 no one would understand what you mean.

    I meant like this of course Win8, Win9, Win10.......:D

Instead of skipping Win 9 they could stop using the .1 like win8, win 8.1 And go for 8,9,10....much better.

Funny they stayed at number 8 for two releases Win8 and Win8.1, but they will skip Win 9 o_O

I'm surprised that people express so much negativity towards something as meaningless as a version number, especially supposedly tech-savvy people. It could be called Windows 13.515 or Windows -0.3 or Windows TastyPancakes for all I care. One should judge the new OS based on its performance, reliability, security and maybe interface. You know, things that actually matter.

Yes, I do think a more straightforward numbering/naming scheme would be better and more convenient for everybody but at the end of the day it's of little significance.

I don't agree, not when it comes to marketing for example. And Windows as a brand. Tastypancakes will surey stick in peoples minds for a longer period of time, than Win 13.515. And people will probably remember when asked that they run Win Tastypancakes.

    Windows Vista
    Mac OS X Mavericks
both are easy pease to remember.

A while ago I asked a friend what OS he use.
"Have you upgraded your OS yet, do you use Win7, Win8, or Win8.1 ?..hm I just know I use Win 8"

Before he knew very well that he used XP and Vista. Now he have no idea he thinks Win8 is Win8.

Personally I rather see they use names instead "Windows Excellent" everyone would remember that name.

I completely agree with you. It's just a matter of preference.
I am more interested in features/impprovements it brings over 8.1. Looks like i will get it once released...

10 is the Bo Derek thing, it supposedly equals perfection!:p 9 is both a positive and negative number; not good for marketing. 11 symbolizes the potential to push the limitations of the human experience into the stratosphere of the highest spiritual perception; the link between the mortal and the immortal; between man and spirit; between darkness and light; ignorance and enlightenment. o_O

I hope MS can deliver on their lofty goals. If they pull it off, we all benefit. If they take a nose dive, choice dwindles. I would hate to see them collapse as Apple is not #1 with me.

If Microsoft can't do with Windows what Apple did with Mac OSX, maybe it should call curtains. I don't see any chance of that happening.

Redmond is simply too big to fail.

Why have we seen so many 'negative for naming-scheme alone' comments? I'm certainly guffawing over it - I really think there are two reasons that Redmond battled over this: "We need to flush Win8 out of our system soooo completely with a double-flush, even" OR someone said, "What if users gets Win95 or Win98 confused with Win9.5 or Win9.8?"

That last one seems convenient, at first, but truly - have we EVER seen Microsoft so far-sighted as to believe they'd deliver FIVE updates?

When's the last Service Pack 6 episode - was that Win2000? Or was that only SP 4?

And I know we've never seen a Service Pack 8 episode... although I don't know why. IF Microsoft was being THAT thoughtful and believed the Win-After-8 might have 5, 6, or 8 updates, fine - congrats on their far-sightedness.

I guess miracles CAN happen, even there.

But I still think they're being foolish. Create the OS. Create the UI. Let the hardware influence (dictate?) the OS-feature installation, and let the User pick and choose UIs. Windows has had dichotomous UIs "forever" - DOS and Win3, DOS and WinX... Aero vs Classic, Metro vs Desktop. Users DO make these choices, whether we like to or not. Why not let us?

Why not encourage that option? They DO encourage Themes, after all... why not acknowledge full UI segregation?

Yeah, what a concept - judge the software based on how it actually works. I find the negativity here irrational and mean. As for the name it really doesn't matter. There will be a "window of opportunity" after the OS is released when people will be open to it and hopefully it will make a positive impression. After that public perception will drive sales, not the name.

FYI it looks like the Technical Preview will become available at 9AM PDT
