My main concern with this is going to be durability. Micro USB isn't the most durable connector, and this looks to be similar. I hope that this will allow systems to include more USB ports. Ever since Intel made the video ports mandatory in their chipsets, typical motherboards have around 6 ports in the back I/O panel; they used to have 8-10. Hopefully with this they can fit more ports in a smaller space. It would help for laptops too. I imagine they will be rolled out gradually, with maybe half the ports new and half "classic" at first, with a few adapter cables included (although it may be up to the device to include that; we'll see).
