It's no wonder there are now conspiracy theories about M$!

My next laptop will almost certainly be a Macbook Pro. If Win 7 gets borked beyond repair on my desktop I'll replace it with Ubuntu. At least I'll sleep at night then!

Following that thread over at MS, there seems to be growing agreement (at least among users, definitely not with the one mod who's replied a few times) that the main problem was a foulup in changing the IP for WU, probably in that update to WU itself, and DNS servers are gradually getting caught up -- those Google addys working for so many probably means their DNS was one of the very first to get updated correctly.

If that's correct, I'm not touching any settings on my system. Everything else on the internet works fine, we've still got almost a week and a half till Sept. Patch Tues., and that should be be plenty of time for most if not all of the remaining DNS servers to catch up.

It was the replacement update that had troubles (installing) for me. Tried a bunch of things, and don't know what fixed it.

Now that many have (hidden) MS14-045 from Windows Update and await someone to greenlight the KB as safe - many of us will go forward without BSOD's and unbootable, bricked PC's.

I just tried the manual update check and the problem returned as shown below.
I was using open dns and switched to "obtain dns server address automatically" TCP(IPv4) and still no joy. So I went back to the 8.8.8.8 alt. 8.8.4.4 trick (which is google dns) and the manual update works o_O And yes I did flush dns cache each time. Anyone else have this problem? (Guess it wasn't safe to go back in the water after all)

After reading your post wolfrun I noticed that the WU pic was yellow (stripe). So I tried a manual update and I'm getting an error also. It says: Windows could not search for new updates. An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer. Error code 80246002. That's the very same error as previously. No idea how it was fixed the previous time.

Good news for you. :) Seems like switching to 8.8.8.8 dns address works for me. I went through the route of the Mr. fixits before and they never worked for me. I guess it does for some but not for me, unfortunately. For now I'll stick with what I have as it seems to work as I just manually checked the updater and it's working o.k. so far. Not too keen on using the google dns address's though. :doubt:

Thanks wolfrun. Some days ago I tried the Mr Fixit 6 times and it still wouldn't work. Then some hours later I tried again to update and to my surprise the windows update worked all of a sudden (no red or yellow bars) by checking it and it scanned for updates.

PS: have no clue how to switch dns addresses and thus couldn't try it. Will keep the download of Mr Fixit on my desktop for a while.

I did this long ago, because this is hardly the first time something like this has happened. I'll wait awhile to hear feedback about the patches, then apply them manually when the coast seems clear. There's a much better chance of a bad patch forking your box than having a vulnerability from not applying it hitting you... especially in this place since we have so many other precautions in place. And also because those vulnerabilities always rely on having a half dozen other conditions having to be met too to work (i.e. Java, open ports, etc...).

I always waited until at least the following Tuesday to apply them, because I figured by then they'd not only pull any bad patches, but have a fixed one out by the following Monday.

I consider automatic updating a security hole personally.

Probably a good idea, and it was what I was doing for a while. It had been years since I have had any issues, but since the change of CEO and the layoffs it seems like they are having a hard time getting their act together. I was also participating in the Windows Phone Developer Program preview, but after they told us we had to flash our phones back to the factory ROM to upgrade, I knew it was time to stop participating in that as well. In the future I will be much more hesitant to install anything from them without waiting to see if others are having issues. They are losing customer trust. I don't care about marketing and buzzwords. Give me a solid product or lose sales.

I asked how things were going for others because at the time I posted manual update check had stopped working for me again. I just tried it now and it's working again without me tweaking or changing anything.

Sorry Niki, I just came on line now so I didn't get a chance to reply to your post. But I see that Bo (Mr.Johnny on Spot ) responded and got you on the right track. lol.
As I have stated before, the Mr. fixits don't seem to work for me so I'm going to stand pat for now and see if this update will eventually correct itself. :)

@wolfrun. Some of us, (including me) cannot always stay on line because there are other things to attend to. Therefore no need to apologize. So many thanks for your help and replies. :)

Something else of note that myself and others have noted - repeatedly running Windows Update resets Windows Update components. This is new from MS as there is no warning to opt-in.
For those that had hidden updates - for purposes of this thread, so as not to be offered the update or updates until they are greenlighted by MS probably should not run WU unless it's needed.

I've been thinking this for a long time. I'd rather not install these 'security' updates at all than have a tanked system. Mind you, if MS fubars my computer there is, of course, less likelihood of it being infected, by virtue that it won't be online.

Anybody else waiting with trepidation for the upcoming borkfest? I honestly don't know whether I'll even install this lot coming up on principle. I've chosen a Macbook Pro I like. Goodbye Borkdays!
