I just got an email notification that the Symbian versions of Skype are going to be permanently "retired". Grrrrr. I will see if my Skype.com subdomain blocking works for the Symbian Nokia I have. The "patch" that was referred to a few posts ago is not what I'm doing. Here's a description of it:

    http://skype-open-source.blogspot.com/2014/08/workaround-about-skype5x-your-version.html.

The 3.01 version I'm using was permantly "retired" well over a year ago and I'm still using it. The way these versions are retired is to stop them from being able to log on to the skype network. The work arounds involve fooling Skype to let them. There is no fundamental change in the technology that prevents them from working once they connect.

For those using Viber (I do as well..): just make sure to disable google analytics on their mobile version.

This has not been a popular move on Microsoft's part. I don't think they really understand Skype or why people use it. I'm not interested in upgrading something that already works and does everything I pay it for. I hate the android version of skype and want to keep using the old Symbian version. I don't like getting no-reply emails telling me to get an android phone if I want to continue using Skype.

Blocking ui.skype.com is no longer working. My Symbian phone wouldn't log on to Skype yesterday but did today. I think they are not letting old versions log on at the server. I've checked the alternatives and there are good ones for those who are using Skype for free but not for those of us who pay for a Skype In number. Except for Magic Jack which uses proprietary hardware that requires the computer to be on to use VOIP, the lowest price VOIP provider I could find that would provide me the same service is more than twice as much and doesn't look any more reliable. I bit the bullet and bought a cheap android phone that I will only use on wifi. I hope I can keep using the Symbian version which works more like a regular phone but I can't afford and extended interruption of phone service right now.
