Firewall with HIPS? Or Without?

Not sure of your meaning of "malware that you did not know about with this" within this context, but yes, HIPS saved my systems twice: for threats that got past G Data by Malware Defender and again by Online Armor for a threat that got past... Emsisoft. Sorry, brain cells containing more detail have long since atrophied, but both times it was surely malware I did not know about.

 

sygate at the time would only detect dropped dlls .. i remember it well from my own testing with 5.5 and 5.6
sygate was not alone here kerio and zone alarm and all the other popular firewalls at the time were equally useless against this type of injection

the only firewall that would detect bifrost for example at this time was outpost firewall then jetico firewall caught on after

an old copy of jetico or outpost would give better protection than sygate imo

Clearly a firewall and HIPS can mitigate many attacks that a firewall alone can't. That said, the HIPS doesn't have to be integrated with the firewall. A separate firewall and HIPS is equally effective and often allows for more fine grained control.

 

Outpost did well then presumedly because of it`s HIPS component and would it still fare as well today(the free firewall)?
