    Hello,

I recently installed Avast Free to give it a try. So far it seems to be running light on my system and despite the lower scores on some AV test, I think I will keep it for a while. I especially like the Hardened Mode for securing a system for a novice.

Since I am testing this out to see now it performs for me, I occasionally run a scan from other software to see how it is working. Upon using an AVG Rescue CD, it picked up the following file:

    Program Files/Avast Software/Avast/aswRec.dll

If you check the digital signature, it states it is signed by: OpenCandy, Inc

It is countersigned by: Symantec Time Stamping Services Signer – G4

My question is is this part of all the extras that Avast ask you if you want to install? (toolbars, etc.)

None of my other security has picked up anything and I am not worried, but I am trying to educate myself on issues like this.

    Thank you.

I have Avast Free but don't have that file. I installed it longer ago than you did though.

I have avast free installed too....However I don't have aswRec.dll anywhere in the avast directories, but I do get avast pop-ups for offers and news.

I found the problem....well in my case anyway.

It was my fault for not doing all the research on installing Avast.

I mistakenly thought the “Software Updater” was for Avast even though it was under the “Tools” part of the installer. This was the only option that I choose under Tools.

I ran the un-installer, and choose the option to change the installed programs and un-checked the Software Updater. I then booted the system and the aswRec.dll was gone.

Thanks to all who took the time to reply to my question.

They just use 3rd party component for internal functionality, nothing else.

To be fair, avast do press you to read the eula regarding 3rd parties in as much as they make it the last page before installing.
