New day, same story...

 

Very good, some nice performance enhancements noticeable with this version installed

Tarantula@ if you have nothing beneficial to add to a topic then please go troll elsewhere.

 

Same could be said for the ZoneAlarm you have as avatar...

avast! team is working on a radical new technology (NG with Dyna-Gen) and until that is done, they are basically just working on bugfixes and minor improvements. I don't know when it will be ready, but i'm hoping it will be sooner than October 2014 target when 2015 version will be released. Then we'll see how it's a "new day, same story". It's just too bad Dyna-Gen didn't work out as they planned for current DeepScreen technology.

 

Have avast team elaborated why Dyna Gen did't work as expected? I remember the announcement about it - it seemed like real breakthrough on the cards until it didn't....

 

It just wasn't delivering the expected results due to limitations in current DeepScreen implementation. They are now moving it into a special "native" hardware virtualized system which should be much more effective and also faster.

I just hate annoying ads. Avast 4.8 used to be a great AV, but lately it's just a colorful advertising machine.

 

Apart from the banner in the interface, I haven't seen any ads for months if not years. So, I'm not really sure what "advertising machine" you're talking about because it just isn't.

 

You haven't seen is not equal to there are no ads.
Whatever, I don't care that much.

 

Oh you're definitely wrong there. I've turned off all the recommendation and social crap, every unwanted thing I can find. It still pops up ads, whether it be World Cup crap or other stuff. I don't know if Tarantula might be referring to the optional junk it installs if you don't uncheck the boxes, but that part isn't a big deal.

 

sorry i agree avast has of late thrown in just about everything except the kitchen sink. and that may be soon to come. as well as adding in the social junk, and the support stuff, and the "upgrade now" to the better version pop ups i got with the last version, etc etc. its all extra junk and avast has become IMO bloatware for those who do not choose custom install (the average user who does not know better)

 

I regretfully agree. I have to carefully do custom install now. Though it's not a great prob for me.

Iv`e personally had to dump Avast! off a few comps lately as it let through several PUP, PUA`s and some other trivial malware (all shields and boxes were ticked).
Hopefully they can start getting the program back on track because generally the company itself seems to have a good ethos...

 

PUP's are NOT enabled by default and i doubt you had them checked...

 

I dont understand...Its absolutely true what rej said.Its been confirmed by avast devs too.

Just because you got some PUPs through doesnt mean to ditch it,PUP detection is off by default you need to turn in on by going into file shield settings from settings menu in UI.And what malware did you get through it? Was it active or just sitting there?? Care to explain more?

 

PUP was 100% checked and the malware was active. Iv`e installed Avast! on many many machines for probably ~10 years and it has served me well most of the time. I think part of the fault is that Avast! is now considered one of the big players in the game so the malware writers make sure there stuff doesn`t get generically picked up.
I`m not singling out Avast! per se, this could be any AV solution but when i hear about "the next big thing" it allways makes me chuckle...

Enable Hardened Mode (Aggressive) and they won't be able to bypass or fool it...

 

They should enable that by default..

Due to my IP(Iran) I could not register the new version online.
I filled the offline form and I received the license.but the new license was invalid



I repeated the procedure and I got the same result.

I had a key for the previous version(4 months ago) and it worked....my Avast is activated for 240 days





Any Idea why the new license are invalid?

 

I hope you know that your key is being shown unless that key is for the Free version

I am new to the Avast thread and have not used Avast since maybe 2004. I understand this thread pertains to the released version AVAST 2014 R4 (9.0.2021) which I installed early this morning and have been testing for about 15 hours now. All I can say is I am blown away. I feel like a kid in a candy store for the first time. My expectations were moderately low, yes, but not so much so that anything which performed adequately would have been a surprise. In the past I felt that RAM usage was a bit on the high side. Bumping RAM in my PC from 4 to 16GB's and throwing in a SSD a few months ago made all the performance difference in the world, but honestly that is not what impressed me so much. I last tried Avast which I think at that time was ALWIL Software or something close to that. Anyway, I remember a radio type of GUI. It was terrible and I banished it from my home PC just for being ugly as hell. So you can imagine my surprise that 10 years later not only is Avast beautiful esthetically, but it has an equally beautiful and very granular GUI. That was just fantastic to see but an absolute joy to configure. Then I took some time (about 12 hours) to see what kind of protection Avast provides and again I was shocked. 12 hours of on and off testing of Avast and this product did something I have only seen once or twice when testing other antivirus software. It flagged every bad URL, caught every PUP, detected 899 pieces of malware (old and new) out of 920. That is about 98% by my count. Anti-Phishing protection was fantastic! The sandbox is great. Disinfection superb. Heuristics are very good. I could go on and on but the bottom line is I have not seen such a complete internet security product maybe ever. For me it's all about protection and not as much about detection. Avast protected my PC with just a handful of bad files left over that were just partials that HitmanPro picked up. I would love to hear from some of you so I can gauge if I'm overestimating Avast's capabilities. I have seen some of the recent tests from AV Comp and AV Test and I think I understand why Avast had slipped a bit of late. From what I can see and read those issues have been fixed. If I am wrong I would love to know. I am very close to buying a license but I will take a breath before I do and wait to get some feedback from the forum. Thanks!

Avast is definately not a bad choice.Its pretty good AV IMO.Apart from the bloat they include which is inacceptable.Custom install works fine though.

Yeah about of late slip downs I know I just ranted about the bloat and that recent down fall on avast forums.But I think they should have fixed that.I recommend you waiting until next AV-Tests results (Shouldnt be that far) but by then you can live with trial I guess.

But again if it works for you,use it despite the test results.

By the way your testing seems to have been pretty deep and well rounded,Mind you can post how avast protected you with the unknown 20 files you talked about? How did deepscreen do? Any filerep/evo-gen detections?
