From past 'similar' situations with other forums over the years, the Avast Forum could very likely be down for weeks.:(

What are the past similar situations that you are drawing from, Willpower?

CastleCops closed its doors and never reopened. Is that what you think will happen with avast support forum?

I don't know how long it should take Avast to rebuild their forum, but so far, it looks like at least two weeks.

'The AVAST forum is currently offline and will remain so for a brief period.'

Brief, as I understand it, would have been much briefer.

On the forum of SimpleMachines.org, which forum software was used by Avast, a reaction from SMF.
    Mind the bold text though link;

Thanks for that link Baserk, that is one of the best explanations of what happened. What is disturbing is not only the lack of communication between Avast and SMF but their failure to keep users informed via their forum landing page (and a link for more information?). It still says 'over this past weeked' for something that happened a fortnight ago.

Usernames aren't at stake because your username is visible on a forum to everyone. Passwords should be separate between unimportant stuff and important stuff. If you have that, it's merely in inconvenience and not really a problem.

As stated, the passwords were hashed, making it very difficult to process/use (but not impossible).
Anyway the parties agreed to work together and that's history.
In any case now the concern is 'How Long' will the forum be inaccessible??
Not a peep that I can find.

What are you going to do with your ESET 10 user, 2 year license now that ESET's forum has been hacked? According to your statement, you should no longer do business with them. Oh wait, a hacked Avast forum is somehow different than a hacked ESET forum.

If SMF is correct and they are making a very clear case and it was a social engineering hack that they got hold of the admin accounts password then infact it would lay on whomevers password was stolen and not Avast as a whole or SMF

Honestly I would not want the code from Norton 2006 anyway ;) Nortons had some major work done since then quite a few revisions of Sonar Tech and its cut some heft since the 2006 line. In fact I have only seen one machine lately that still had Norton 2006 on it and it was not connected to the internet at all.

Sooner and later every security vendor is going to have a breech and hacking becomes more common with our current web systems, Kaspersky was hacked in 2009, BitDefender was hacked in 2009, Avira and AVG have both had their websites hacked in 2013. However its all going to come down to how well vendors are protecting other data. So far its all been frontend hacks (forums, sales websites - With the exception of Symantec Source Code). So far all their backend information has been kept secure (cloud file information, ect). Its not garbage from security vendors its the continued game of cat and mouse. Security vendors were ahead in website security, hackers caught back up, and now vendors continue to improve their technology, the cycle continues to repeat itself.

Don't forget Webroot. Seems someone will run out of options.

Has anyone heard when the forum will be back up? It's been 15 days.

For those asking, yes, a number of posts have been removed from this thread. In fact, a member who wrote many of them, did the most deletions him/herself (i.e. self-deletions). Other posts were removed either because of lost context, based on those deletions, or, because the posts were in no way related to the topic of the avast! forum being offline. And, a couple others were mutual bashes between a couple members.

The next posts in this thread really need to be on topic to the state of the avast forum.

Well what has me thinking, is now we have summer fast arriving and folks take holidays (even Techies). I'm not sure what priority the forum has in the whole scheme of things with Avast upper management so who knows, as there is a void in information available, it could be " a long summer".
    I hope I'm proven wrong.

Must be some details to work out... I added a screen shot above showing the reopening message. I got all the way through a password reset and got logged in. But, the closure message returned after that.
