Actually, it also flags many legitimate Windows system files as malicious! So beware!

Any Idea how the behaviour blocker is now in the final? Hopefully unlike the the previous betas it works just like 360 IS does it?

Oh and by the way on default settings TS without internet connection is nothing more than optimization tool.Because without internet I tested it with 64 Malware pack from malwaretips and it just detected 1!!! without internet on defaults that is no avira and BD.So for a average Joe its a cloud product on defaults. On turning on the internet it picked up all of them.

Anything goes wrong with the internet connection and joe plugs in a infected stick, its going to be BOOM!! I would appreciate Bitdefender or avira engine coming turned on by default settings.I mean one or both of them should be kept on when it comes from the factory.

Keeping in mind that the behaviour monitoring is as strong as in 360 IS it still leaves alot of load of the risk accidently going offline and getting into trouble.

The only way I'd ever get infected was if I were online, so it's a non-issue for me and probably most people.

Many of you have wondered what is happening with 360 Total security as far as future improvements or changes in the product. Why would Qihoo develop two products that seem to have loads of overlap. The following is a conversation I had a couple of days ago with Marc Lin from the Qihoo support team. Marc addressed some of the questions concerning not only 360 Total Security, but 360 Internet Security, too. I apologize in advance for not asking every question that has been recently posed about the two products. Marc's time is at a premium so I could only get about 10 minutes. In addition there were questions that I asked which he could not, or didn't want to answer at this point in time. Lastly, I'm not a professional interviewer so forgive me I didn't do a job worthy of David Frost. ;)

stephentony: Marc, can you give us an overview of your new product 360 Total Security?

Marc: Sure. 360 Total Security is our new flagship desktop security product which is more than security, it can also lighten your PC. 360 Total Security offers complete protection against viruses and other type of threats. For example, when you are shopping online, downloading files and browsing webpages, 360 Total Security can protect you from cybercrime. In addition, you can perform the one-click cleanup feature to keep your PC in optimal condition.

stephentony: Many people have asked questions regarding the 5 engines 360 TS runs. Can you break that down for us?

Marc: 360 Total Security mainly has five features. Firstly, the Checkup. Fast checking the overall condition of your computer’s safety and health in one click. It keeps your computer in good shape and helps it to stay healthy by running the checkup periodically. Secondly,is the Virus Scan. Regular virus scans will help you remove threats promptly. This feature integrates five important antivirus engines including the 360 Cloud Engine, Active Defense Engine, QVMII, Avira and Bit Defender that offer you complete protection and the best detection. Thirdly, is Speedup. It can manage and optimize boot-up applications, plug-ins and services. Besides, it can shorten your PC boot time and let it get ready sooner. Forth, is Cleanup. It helps you to save disk space, cleans junks from your computer and makes it run more efficiently. Fifthly, is Protection. TS protects your computer from malware, phishing, backdoor and new types of threats via the fastest and most intelligent cloud technologies.

stephentony: I think everyone is wondering about the apparent degree of overlap between 360 TS and 360 IS. Aside from the addition of the Avira engine and the tune-up and speed-up features in 360 TS there seems to be little difference between the two products.

Marc: Yes, 360 Total Security is our successor product to 360 Internet Security. It’ll replace 360 IS as our main PC security product in the near future. With the Avira engine you will see even better results with no slowdowns of your PC. We know this from our experience with the same 5 engines in the Chinese version, which has been available for quite a time now, but not in English. The Avira engine adds improved protection and cleaning of malware. There are also additional features that will be added to 360 TS in the near future that will make it even better in protecting your PC. Unfortunately I cannot go into those new features right now, but we are very excited about what is planned.

Marc: We’re wondering if there is any possibility that we could have further engagements like this one and maybe Wilders opening a discussion board for 360 Total Security? (A place where users could talk about 360TS. Good or bad things) and feeding back malware samples. (Trendy or top-notch malware that requires a good solution)

stephentony: A thread for 360 TS has already been started and it looks like it will be just as active as the thread for 360 IS has been. Feeding back malware samples is something I'm sure members would do indivually but I don't think that can be done in this forum, but I will look into that.

Marc: Please let us know if what we discussed suffices as we can always answer new questions from members. Maybe feeding us 3 or 4 questions each month based on popularity.

stephentony: Thank you for your time Marc.

Marc: Thank you for your questions and we are looking forward to hearing from you in the future.

So that is it. Again, I didn't have much time and to be honest I was not as prepared with questions as I should have been. If I talk to Marc again down the road I will do a better job.

Thanks, that was great! Maybe next time ask him why they turn off BD and Avira engine by default. I'd wonder if they are still active via the cloud or something. I'd also like his thoughts on why some users are seeing worse detection with Total Security vs Internet Security.

There is plenty of question of why 360TS fails in protection as of now? Is it because is beta? Also why removing sandboxing that 360 internet security has? As of now there is nothing good or great with 360TS. Maybe when it matures.

Should ask real question regarding the effectiveness or issues it has and not trivial ones.

I intend to switch when I see better reports from the more enlightened members of Wilder's. For now, staying with 360 IS seems the better option. Keep plying away, chaps.

So where are they at with this now? Last I checked a few weeks ago Windows Action Center in Win 7 wouldn't recognize that it was even running. Is it 64-bit yet? I think it was just 32-bit early on.

Sandboxing was not removed from 360 TS because it never had it in the first place. Qihoo has plans for adding components to TS but they also want to reduce the heavier system resource consumption that has become a bigger issue with IS. Also, TS does not fail in protection. Since the product is out of beta I have tested its effectiveness and it's quite good! As far as trivial questions go, this is something we did with Marc on the spur of the moment with no questions prepared in advance. If we do this on a regular basis, and all indications from Marc is that he wants to, then we will look to ask questions that the majority of members would like answers to. What is clear from our conversation is that 360 TS will replace 360 IS before the year is out.

Thanks for that information stephentony. While 360 IS is around, I'll keep using this because it has an integrated sandbox. If 360 IS withdrawn and 360 TS doesn't have a sandbox, I could go back to using Sandboxie for sandboxing browsers. This being the case though, I could also use something other than Qihoo. The inclusion of a sandbox is a big attraction for me. Without it, part of the reason for staying with Qihoo would disappear.

Well it failed here when tested against links from malcode and clean-mx and also malwaredomainlist. Perhaps try them. The only thing worked good was its on-demand scanning that picked some of the malwares downloaded from those sites that its protection did not detect and allowed it to download.

Yes, 360IS sandbox rules and its the best feature of it to me. Sandboxie is good but problematic for me and also bufferzone seems to have some issues too for me. The only other option for a sandbox is Comodo and its sandbox is working great.

Well I just retested 360TS and ran it against first 5 malcode links. Well as usual it did not stopped or blocked or warned any of the from downloading. Also it did not warn or stop any of them from running and they installed fine. I ran a on-demand scan on the 5 downloaded malwares and 360TS detected 2 of the as trojans.

So its protection should have atleast warned 2 of the downloads but it did not. Also I had turned all the engines on and waited until they were updated. I set it to the maximum custom setting by turning all protection on.

What setting are you using? The one with BD/Avira, or one of the ones without?

One reason it fails is because the BD and Avira defs are always 1 or 2 days out of date. I have never found them to be current, even when 360 TS has updated and says everything is up to date. Not so with the BD and Avira defs.

Mine have always been current so far, never more than a 1 day difference (and that is almost always due to time differences in my case).

And yet every test I've put it through it comes out very much with similar results as 360 IS. It failed here? You mean to say when you tested it. I've used links from malcode and malware packs from various sources and as I said from an earlier post, I have two identical PC's with identical configurations. One with 360 IS and the other with 360 TS and results have varied by so little it's negligible. Now I will admit that the beta had some issues but I have not found that to be true of the most recent version. And lest anyone forget, 360 IS had many people saying the same things about it almost a year ago. It had lousy detection rates, it was only updated once every few days, some couldn't get it to update at all, it conflicted with users configurations, and then all the privacy issues some were concerned about. Now look at how many are on the 360 IS bandwagon, as if they knew it was a great product all along. I think 360 TS is far from perfect at this point in it's development but I believe Qihoo is very serious about what their goals are, and they genuinely want a give and take with their users in making it a better product. How many companies desire to do a monthly Q&A to answer user questions, of a free product no less? I have a solution for you taleblou. If you don't trust it, don't run it. You like Avast and Comodo FW so stick with it.

A perfect example of what I am talking about. I've also had regular updates after leaving the beta behind, but yet I've heard other people say 360 IT never updates. What an individual has for hardware, software, OS, the PC's configuration and all the possible issues these things can throw into the mix, along with the user, should not be underestimated. Lets not forget that just because someone, or even more than a few, have an issue with an AV product, it does not mean the product has failed. Hopefully Marc Lin is serious about answering user questions on a regular basis. I believe he is. Personally I have no horse in this race except the desire to have a forum where we can have a relationship with company support that allows for discussion that is meaningful and the criticism constructive. That is exactly what Marc said to me the other day. He wants to talk about the good and bad so I'm going to leave it at that. Goodnight my friends!

Actually, you are right. That's exactly what I'm running. taleblou, have you heard of anyone else who is having what you think are Windows 7 32 Bit related issues? If so, that's a perfect question for Marc in a couple of weeks. Like I said previously, I will be better prepared next time I talk with him. His idea was to come up with 2 or 3 issue questions each time we talk. It's funny because I had no idea this whole thing with him was ever going to happen in the first place. I sent Qihoo an e-mail asking them if they would be interested in doing something to answer questions from forum members. I sent it to them with my cell number because I am a freelance network security specialist so it has my number if anyone wants to talk to me about a job. Then last week I get this call on my cell and it's this man with a Chinese accent asking me my name. I'm under my kitchen sink tightening a sleeve around a pipe and I was like who is this? Hi I'm Marc Lin from Qihoo and that was it. He wanted to do the Q&A but I was totally at a loss. I was not sure anyone would respond to the e-mail let alone actually call me. Anyway, if you don't mind do you think you would be up to putting a list together of things you have heard that are reoccurring problems, and not just isolated incidents. He said he wanted the good with the bad so I'll take him at his word. He also wants to address questions that are not necessarily related to bugs. He even wants suggestions for product improvement. I am thinking if two or three members can do this, then I can sort through the info and address issues that are most relevant. I am a bit surprised he wants to do this but then again I shouldn't be. Qihoo has some long term goals in exploiting capitalism that go way beyond 360 Total Security. So PM me if you are interested.

Missing some stuff, no scheduled scans
Self protection is not on by default
Installation is not X64 but 32bit on my Windows 7 x64

Stephen- Keeping in mind that 360TS has only been out for a short time, even so the following things are apparent:

1). There is without doubt some sort of delay in the availability of local definitions versus 360IS (either 4.0 or 5 beta). There is actually no realistic problem with this as whatever samples are missed by TS (again, vs IS) with on-demand scan (local) will be detected by the Cloud when the file is run. The real issue here would be from a PR standpoint. Many amateur and professional malware testers will base a verdict on an immediate local response and take it no further. A very misleading result would be presented.

2). Which leads into the usefulness of having Avira on board- Is the addition of Avira in any way responsible for the tardiness of local definition update? So far I've seen very little benefit of Avira over the engines of IS, and that benefit so far has not been statistically significant.

3). The biggest issue with TS is the Proactive module. Whatever proactive rules are coded into IS 5 beta MUST be incorporated into 360TS. Currently TS will not block registry changes leading to process hijacking and malware autostart entries. IS 5 beta does indeed prevent such changes, and does so silently. For a bit more info on this, see the thread here: http://malwaretips.com/threads/regarding-qihoo.26820/

4). Qihoo in whatever flavor is horrid against adware/PUPS. Although most of the time Adware/PUPS is self-inflicted and can be easily rectified, I've found enough Adware downloaders that can be just as destructive as any trojan. This point, as well as the inefficiencies of the 360IS on demand sandbox and the lack of a firewall are the reasons why I feel for maximum protection Qihoo should be run with Comodo firewall.

Finally please know that your attempt to be a liaison between Qihoo and the geek world is much appreciated!
