My experience with Logitech has been pretty good and my experience with Microsoft has been pretty bad. Can't get too specific about the models as I do no have them anymore.

Generally WiFi i.e. 2.4 GHz wireless connection is far Superior to a Bluetooth based connection, so look at keyboards and mice combos that operate on the 2.4 GHz wireless connection. I have been using the Logitech mk550 combo for quite a while now and both mouse and keyboards have excellent range and zero lag even when I use them across the living room (10+ feet) watching movies on a 60 inch TV.

Check the reviews on Amazon here. But I recommend you buy it from Sams Club here, they have an excellent deal on this combo. However, for Sams Cub you either need to have or know someone who has a membership, and you have to be in USA too.

I would go with a Logitech combo
    the material is of quality,
    the connection is reliable,
and the software can be used across multiple devices
also you can use only one USB for both peripherals
