I think it's actually too good and they know it. The paid versions offer mostly only bloatware in addition and the free version probably would have gotten the same test results at AV-Comparatives and AV-Test, if they'd had it tested. But yes, it's a shame, since the free version is the only Bitdefender product I'd even consider using (if I was using AV's) and not because it's free. I'd rather pay for this one and wouldn't take the other ones for free :cautious:

Are they providing fixes but not announcing in the forum?

Coz previously BD Free use to delete files detected as malware in archives i.e zip. This I had tested on Win 7 64.

Today I tested on XP 32. BD Free didn't deleted malware files from zip. When I ran files from zip directly, it correctly deleted temp files related to malware but didn't deleted files from zip. When extracted, it correctly quarantined files.

I dont know if they fixed this or the prob was specific on Win 7 64.

So on XP it seems fine.

Can anyone test on Win 7 64?

Last time I checked, BD Free did detect and clean viruses from archives. But unfortunately I cannot confirm if that has changed now because it's not running on my test machine right now.

The version number hasn't changed since Oct. 2013. They have added virus signatures daily, but no software updates.

I meant it use to delete instead of quarantine from archives.
Can anyone check on Win 7 64 Bits?

Though the version number remains the same but I think occasionally I have seen update in logs that just mentioned "BD was updated". I guess this could be product update i.e fixes/improvements. Coz signature updates mentions engine version & databases.
Anyone saw just this "Bitdefender was updated" in their logs?

I stopped using BD Free a while ago - one of the reasons I stopped was that they did, at least once, update the code and not increment the version number. That's not good software development practice. Together with other bugs discussed in this thread, it made me question the product.

  9. FleischmannTV,

One additional problem with BD free, one of the exe's is not ASLR enabled.

Don't understand why security companies don't apply good security practice themselves o_O

    Yes, I remember that.

The customer's won't notice it and if it won't stop them from becoming product of the year, why would they care? There's not enough demonstrations out there showing how such a product could make an intrusion attempt easier instead of harder. I wouldn't be surprised to see a complete Chrome sandbox bypass thanks to exploiting a sloppily programmed web-anti-virus module, hence entirely defeating the sandbox without a flaw in the sandbox itself.

Does anyone still recommend this? I don't mind Windows Defender/MSE too much, but I'd rather have a little better protection without all the bloat that comes with other free AV's if possible.

There are better free choices. This one still has unresolved bugs and it appears to have basically been abandoned.

:( such a shame considering its potential. Care to suggest the better free choices without the bloat? Thanks.

You might checkout Ad-Aware Free AV+ (it uses the BD engine and gets pretty good reviews).

    Roboscan Internet Security Free
    http://www.roboscan.com/home/home_main.aspx

Advantages of using Roboscan Internet Security:
    1. Multi-layered protection with award-winning dual enginesRoboscan uses two award-winning engines,
the BitDefender Engine and Roboscan’s Tera Engine, to defend your computer. These two layers of protection identify and block malware (such as spyware, trojans, adware, worm, viruses and so on) and hacking tools.

I would still recommend BD free. For me it works fine and the detection rate in my tests i exelet.
I tried Roboscan free, it was otherwise nice and light but the detection rate was poor. It didn't detect malware that Bitdefender does even if it is using BD engine.
Now I am back to BD

BD Free is fine as long as it does not run into any issues but when it does be prepared to face something like this.

what i can suggest at this point is:never disagree with BD Free on any of its detection/cleanup actions & immediately restart the PC whenever it ask you to do even if it is not required.

I don't trust any test where a product that can't even pass AVC tests is shown as the best thing since sliced bread. The same applies to AVT.

BD Free is popular, there are good alternatives. Some are reportedly as good as BD's paid AV of which BD Free is a subset.

RoboScan does great in VB100, I'm just not wild about 24-hour cycle Bitdefender updates (and their too-often tendencies to skip days at a time) when Lavasoft Ad-Adaware Free (& paid, of course) downloads them as soon as BD releases 'em. There can be up to 20 updates a day...

    Cheers.

Does BD free uses 2012 version & not the latest, neither 2013 nor 2014?
