Why can't we just get an AV these days?

agree with op , but you do seem to have a thing about webroot, send them a log so they can have a look at it, i like webroot but lack of positive testing puts me off, emsisoft has had goosd results lately and is very light on resources.
A few years ago it was anti virus, then firewalls joine din then sytem cleaners derfrags ect, security should be just that, but think most of the companies offer this

    Hi Webbit,

There is a Test here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=360632 and here: https://community.webroot.com/t5/We...cores-100-in-MRG-Efitas-tests/m-p/54082#M2670 also I just asked Grayson Milbourne Director, Security Intelligence for Webroot again at the end of this thread it's a good read https://community.webroot.com/t5/Co...e-from-AV-Comparatives-and-Webroot/td-p/17708

Forticlient offers just the AV and WebFilter. Really basic.
    MSE is AV only.
    ESET is very minimal
These are the 3 choices from the top of my head.

It's probably already in the works 'super new encrypted IM, built in!', you can bet on it.

As for the inevitable WSA fanboi brigades arrival, do we really need to rehash that? My problems with that product are legion by this point. Auto-Quarantine of good files, incessant false positives, false rootkit positives I could never overcome. Slowdowns in the browser. CPU spikes under some programs, and at times Explorer itself spiking. Features/Checkboxes that didn't really seem to work properly. Auto-Blacklisting of good programs, requiring over a dozen tickets to be opened to get them whitelisted because WSA would constantly place them back into monitor. No authoritative testing of the product (Rubenking doesn't count). Well known issue where your browser stops permitting key-input. WSA was a big waste of my time, constantly fighting with it, and check the forum to see others find the same issues. The list goes on and on, it's just something I won't be dealing with anymore, don't take it personally - Ok? I specifically stopped reading, or posting in the Webroot section, I don't run Webroot, I won't run it, and therefore I don't have any logs to send to some Gmail account. Please get over it.

I'm well aware of memory usage specifics regarding products. But Clam+Sentinel use around 0.03% of CPU over a week period, which says a lot. Tiny ram use aside, it's a zero impact true AV addition, without all of the nonsense, clever checkboxes, and marketing fluff.

I am sure nobody wants to rehash anything, but what you do is make false, unsupported statements, and when asked to explain, the extent of your response is "Blah, Blah, Blah"...what do you expect?

You were offered the best possible support, which you chose (strangely) to reject, preferring to embark on an attempt to bad-mouth the product elsewhere on the forum.

You have, until now, provided no concrete evidence to support your claims.

But I guess any reader here already noticed it. If it does the same with its own business then... well... ;)o_O

Any problems I have with WSA, I post in their forum so they can get fixed.

Brigade, my point was - why put a feature in, advertise it as amazing, then put a checkbox to disable it? Does that checkbox even disable it? I'd be interested in monitoring the programs activity to see if it does. That's like putting in an amazing collision avoidance system in a vehicle, then putting a button on the dash to disable it. It's like putting a super gear system on a bike, then putting a slider on the handbars to turn it off. It literally makes no sense at all, but perhaps from a marketing perspective it does. Has anyone actually asked why the checkbox is there, and if it does anything?

Nevertheless, let's please not turn this into yet another WSA thread. I purposely avoid the WSA sections of this forum. I only used it as an 'example' of the kind of crap I really hate in the AV world - more buttons, more checkboxes, and more useless features.. Don't take it personally kids. Can we get this back on topic?

If you post anecdotic evidence to support your statements then don't be surprised to be questioned. You simply avoid the right thread as you can't provide evidence for your statements. Meanwhile you keep trying hard to find problems in WSA and drop here and there criticism to it. Not sure what are you hidden motives but that's not really professional. :)

And in the end they are driving me and my customers away. My team and I must save hundreds if not thousands of man-hours a year by doing away with all this "protection".

I haven't installed anti-virus programs on my main machine for many years as well, although I do install them on my clients computers. I haven't had any issues since the Blaster worm back in 2003. These days, a hardened system and a little common sense go a long way.

Agreed. Also if anything, this affirms the fact that if we don't really NEED protection, we should at least be able to find a tiny, light, unintrusive AV to toss on 'just in case', right? Given that, it's DARN HARD to find those these days, it's either a bloated suite, or no AV at all. Which is why I am leaning towards ClamAV+Sentinel stacked on top of MalwareBytes. MBAM itself is probably enough these days, and is very light. But ClamAV tosses another 4 million+ sigs into the mix (not including Generics), can't hurt, and adds absolutely no weight to a system.

I think the need for a tiny, light, unobtrusive, featureless AV will grow as time progresses. Also, PUP seems to be what it's all about today, and most AV's are pretty hideous with those. The last client machine I worked on had roughly 98 PUPs or PUP traces, not a single true virus. So I view those as being more troublesome anyway.

Tiny, light, and unintrusive are the key words there, absolutely. That combination is so hard to find these days. A little off topic from AVs, but I miss the old days of Sygate Personal Firewall and other free security software. Even free AVs have gotten quite bloated since then.

That is why Bitdefender should be kicking themselves in the teeth right now because their current free AV has SO much potential, yet they don't seem to take it seriously anymore.

FWIW, quite a lot of work goes into any complex piece of software. For an antivirus:
    - The kernel driver has to scan stuff in real time without reducing performance too much
    - The userspace part of the AV engine has to not incur too much overhead, while also being effective
    - The heuristics have to be good enough to detect stuff, but not paranoid, or there will be (possibly disastrous) false positives
    - The whole thing has to meet the deadlines set by management

... That's the stuff I've gotten from cursory knowledge of operating systems, and a couple months working for a relatively small company in a very junior position (that doesn't involve touching a single line of compiled code).

Point is, designing good software is not easy. Designing good security software much less so (not in the least because "security software" is almost an oxymoron to start with).

BTW there is Kaspersky antivirus or KAV its just harder to find than their full suite.

I found eset AV pretty light myself but currently running none but for a scheduled hitman pro scan.

.. and you get pop ups: Please install junk toolbar, please install grime fighter! Sometimes antiviruses are more annoying than scareware. :(

Forticlient could be a nice AV, please make it lighter. :)

Haven't anti-malware programs gotten more complicated because malware itself is more varied and sophisticated in getting around simple signature-based protection?

because as marketer, I can sell product easier if I tell people that it have magical and NEW additional fuction .

it work 90% of the time for the mass market. and profit from sales is the only way for companies to survive.

unless one company proof that simpler feature can bring big sales, this wont stop rolling in foreseeable future.

Malwarebytes? Not an AV, but they're proof that a relatively simple product can succeed if it's very good at its job. Then again, it's just so much easier to add more eye candy than actually improving a piece of software.

Thus, if Boost ceases to post here for a long while, we already know why. ;)

But seriously, I too went AV-less for quite a while & encountered zero problems. Of course, I am ALWAYS in Shadow Mode when surfing. Plus I clone my C drive every 5 days & always retain clones for 2-3 months. Plus I use ADinf integrity checker weekly. Ironclad security, right?

BUT ... I am on XP & intend to stay with it - despite M$ dropping support thereto. Therefore, I decided a lite AV might be a good idea. Ergo, I installed Immunet-Free, which is cloud-based & does all its scans online. Ergo, no updates to download/install. Very very light. No ap-cray toolbars etc. Great forum/support. Effectiveness? Untested since 2010, so hu nose? However, as a compromise between (Option 1: NO AV) versus (Option 2: do-everything bloatware AV), I am taking a chance with Immunet.

bellgamin!! haven't see you in a while, thx for the enlightenment sir :)

@inside out : malwarebytes are great and I like it too,
they have respectable market share :-http://www.opswat.com/about/media/reports/antivirus-january-2014-

you can see from my link : avast, avg, eset is still winning the game. but I hope malwarebytes goes up all the way to the top :thumb: (without adding any new fuction that we don't need)

note : simple and free microsoft solution is the overall winner :D
