    Hi! Two questions pls:

1.) Is MBAM Pro (realtime protection enabled) and Windows Defender (enabled) compatible with each other in Windows 8.1 RTM? Will they ever fight against each other in case they BOTH detect a malware?

2.) If ever they are compatible with each other, is that combo ENOUGH? Or do I have to replace Windows Defender with other antivirus or add a personal firewall/HIPS like PrivateFirewall? Thanks.

Is that how you do it ? And how did you learn that nothing is enough?

I didn't really want to comment but when you gave a suggestion like this for a very comfortable and easy to use ehhmm setup I needed to ask.

But this wasn't the OP's question but I guess you didn't notice that.

Windows 8 Defender alone is enough in most cases. If you want a secondary scanner you can just use it on demand. If you want to mix your setup and trying to build layers then I suggest to try different approach than blacklisting, like sandbox or anti-executable for example.

If you really all that worried about detection rate, then I don't think you will be ever satisfied no matter what AV you are using. All AVs will miss something someday.

Regarding classical HIPS, if you really wish to do some works and ready for some massive failures when trying them out until you find the one that works well for you, then go for it. If not, then I suggest to try the easier methods.

If you're a savvy user, I would say yes.

Yes, actually I was using EAM before, but the free trial is expiring, don't have money to pay for full version, and don't like using trial reset though I was using that before.

Actually I have switched to 360 Internet Security, but EAM is much better. Yeah you're right every AV will fail at some point at some time.

    Hello ifacedown:

If I were you, I'd also install the free version of Avira or Avast. Either of these are quite compatible with MBAM Pro.

Avira, if not Avast, would disable Windows Defender during their install.

    HTH :)

    Hi.

Last night I installed Avast 2014 Free edition - beta.

I downloadad a two-day old 222 malware samples, and Avast missed six of them.

However, when those samples are just 1 day old, Emsisoft missed only one.

Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit. An anti-exploit tool provided by Microsoft, utilizing the built-in security features of Windows operating systems, preferably the modern OSes. Pretty tricky to set up. It may break certain programs so you need to experimenting which mitigation techniques need to be disabled for those programs.

I think SpywareBlaster, Defender and MBAM are enough. Especially if you are behind a router. MBAM is a great scanner and you get your real time protection with Defender and SpywareBlaster, to a degree.
Although the white list is an interesting and newer concept and worth considering. It is just a different way of comparing items if you wish to look into it.
If you have $20. sandboxing is good but takes a bit of watching tutorials first.

For myself I agree 100%. However for most users I think they need protection.

As for Windows Defender + MBAM Pro, I would keep MBAM Pro and replace Windows Defender with something with better detection and less system impact such as 360 Internet Security.

hello. So you think that 360 IS is lighter than windows Defender?

What about Baidu? Is it lighter than 360 IS?

When there are free solutions that are lighter than Windows Defender and offer better protection, I don't see how anyone can use it.

    Notably: 360 IS, Avira, Panda..

A vs B comparisons aren't allowed here a Wilders. However, it has been my experience that Windows Defender running on Windows 8 caused noticeable slowdowns at times, as it did on Windows 7 where it is an antispyware program and not a full antivirus.

I disable Windows Defender on all my computers for this reason.

I've used MBam Pro for a couple months when Windows 8.1 was first released. It of course disables Windows Defenders real-time protection since it uses its own. l also dual boot with Windows 7 where I use Avira.

A few weeks ago, I discovered that some portable programs I jointly use between Win7/8 on a separate drive were not working anymore. I thought it was Windows 8 acting up with compatibility issues, so I re-booted into 7 and immediately when I clicked on those programs I got a a virus warning from Avira. These programs were infected with some virus (forgot the name) that targeted exe files. Did a full scan with Avira and fortunately only the programs on the separate drive were infected. Avira had the option to repair them which I chose and found the programs worked again when I booted back into 8.1

This caused me to lose faith in MBam Pro. So uninstalled it and am now using 8.1 Defenders real-time protection, so hope that continues to work. I would install Avira but dont like the slow scan initiation time and slower boot on 8.1.

As mentioned above, MBAM Pro does not disable Defender.
Perhaps those portable programs didn't work properly on Win8.1 because MBAM blocked/quarantined/deleted stuff?
What did the MBAM logs on Win8.1 tell you?

It has been seen that having the operating system updated, a very good antivirus programme (updated automatically), a good HIPS programme (updated automatically) along with a good firewall is not sufficient to keep one out of trouble.

Besides what has been mentioned already - it is very, very important to have your Flash and Java updated if you use them. Many infections come by way of older versions that are installed. Another thing - even if you keep them installed it is also very, very important to not have any older versions of these on your computer as they can be used by malware. The current installations/versions of Flash and Java allow for automatic updates so keep that in mind when selecting boxes to check when installing.

Lastly you may wish to consider trying Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit even though it is still in beta.

    Best regards

May have disabled defender myself. Some AV products with RT protection disable defender, I thought MBAM was one of them. But thats besides the point. Since it occured sometime in January, I dont have access to logs from that time. MBAM did not quarantine or delete any of the infections, as the exe files were still there, although it may have blocked the infected programs from executing. Avira flagged them as Win32/Almanahe virus and offered option to repair and programs worked afterwards.

MBAM won't do this as it is not antivirus or meant to replace one.
