    Hello Witttr,

    On behalf of the Polish users, I would like to ask you about future of Avira in Poland.
    Avira has released products in many languages, but not in Polish. Strange, you have fast growing market and you don't have official section for Poland. No support, no marketing, no products with Polish interface.

    If you need help, I'm here and I'm waiting for official response from Avira. Do you have any plans to create Polish division of Avira in Poland?

    My feedback to Avira would be to keep free and paid products separate. I stopped using Avira Premium due to the escalating encroachment of unwanted advertising in the product. The toolbar and the marketplace are the two I remember most. Although I could turn these off or not use them, I didn't appreciate the fact that they were there at all. Now that I'm using Linux, it doesn't matter to me anymore. However, while I was still running Windows, this is what drove me to one of your competitors.

    In my opinion, GUI is already good. No need for drastic changes. Adding a notifier for windows firewall will be a good move. Thanks for listening to our feedbacks.

    I stumbled upon the Mail+Firewall fix for Windows 8.1 massive boot slowdown by accident, but it appears to be fixing the issue for Avira owners, at least - a temporary solution. Glad to see it's being investigated.

    I am highly encouraged by these posts. As I noted, I used PAID Avira for roughly 10 years, then left for other solutions when detections dropped for awhile, and the update fiasco some time ago. As I said, after brief affairs with other products, the bloat drove me away from them. I am happy to say I purchased 6 licenses to Avira over the last weeks, and deployed Avira Enterprise recently for a fairly large client. Once this Win8.1 boot issue is solved, I intend to deploy Avira on a much greater scale (1000+ units) over the next year.

    So all of this is great news really, and I do appreciate the support and feedback. For the record, I've never used Avira Free beyond a few weeks of testing before purchasing. It's worth every penny. I also appreciate the anti-NSA stance as indicated, this will drive more clients to you without a doubt, especially as Snowden files show US-Based AV's may be 'whitelisting' state sponsored threats. While I DO love Metro style interfaces, I find Avira's current one to be dated, but very acceptable!

    Keep up the good work!

    Is it available for Linux? And will you be using it for more than a few weeks days before you've changed your avatar to something else?? :p

    Re: Avira update and request for feedback.

    Hello and warm regards from India Wittr.

    First of all I'd like to welcome you to our forums:D
    That you've signed up to get closer to the customer's needs/grievances gives me greater hope for Avira.

    I've been a constant user of Avira (Free, Premium and Internet Security) for the last 6 years and have never felt the need to substitute it with anything else for more than a month or so.
    It's because Avira has been the lightest on my system all the while maintaining an impressive detection.

    Why are you not marketing Avira more aggressively in Asia and India?
    In India, you can buy an original Kaspersky, Bitdefender, Norton License for less than Rupees.500/3Pc/1year. and are available on almost every e-commerce websites like Flipkart, Snapdeal etc and are even available on almost every Brick and Mortar store even on the remotest of villages.

    While Avira licenses retail at more than Rs.1300-1400 and not available everywhere. Why so?
    Surely you can't afford to ignore a country with more than a billion population?

    In the last few years 2011,2012, I've witnesses Avira's reputation decline due to poor detection, but things are looking better now on 2014, but please do be consistent.

    I think we need a fully fledged working HIPS component (Proactiv) on x64 systems, why haven't we seen it in the last 7 years since x64 OSes became more mainstream?
    Are you not focussing on developing a working and effective HIPS for x64?

    Even though Detection rates are stellar, the signatures are added too slow.
    Why is the 0-Day detection(with/without signatures) so bad?

    Even if Avira products detect some malware, the cleanup is less extensive than Kaspersky/Bitdefender.

    Avira Scanner Luke Filewalker was once the fastest system scanner, and now it languishes near the bottom middle, why so?
    Luke Filewalker scans the same files repeatedly on the subsequent system scans, wouldn't it be a good idea to do like the competition does and include an option to whitelist already scanned files. That'd reduce scan times considerably.

    Avira Forums have become virtually a desert nowadays, now that the volunteering helpers have taken leave. Questions made by users have no guarantee of being answered. Couldn't a few more Avira designated Volunteers, helpers, forum members be introduced?
    Couldn't you introduce something like the Bitdefender Chat support (for maybe the paying users only)

    p.s.

    I really really hope that you read my feedback and take your time to respond to my suggestions/grievances. I am a longtime Avira user after all, but I am no fanboy, I'll not pull any punches when you ask me what's wrong with Avira, nor shall I forget all that's right with it.:)

    Re: Avira update and request for feedback.

    WOW. just re-installed the newest version (also tested the newest beta) and this will be removed now. the overall startup time on my system (fresh install NO other conflicting av please do not say that is what it is and no other av or any other software besides drivers and windows updates installed) is ABYSMAL and this is on windows 7 x64. it gets to the desktop screen just a bit slower than when i had the previous av on the prior image but then when it hits the desktop screen i cant do ANYTHING. even the wireless just sits connecting. it takes a good 60-90 seconds or more before the umbrella for avira actually opens and wifi is connected and i can open or do anything at all. i know some mentioned the slow startup but i had thought that was for users of win 8.

    has anyone else seen this with windows 7 x64? for me at least right now i will once again uninstall avira and i guess wait to see if this gets fixed soon, once it FINALLY gets everything started its really pretty light MUCH lighter than i think avira has ever been for me but i cant deal with this startup slowdown. i use this pc on the road and i always shut it down i NEVER take it with me in either sleep or hibernate so i need startup to be quick.

    again tested the current release and the newest beta from the beta center and actually the beta is even slower for me to start then the current release version.

    Re: Avira update and request for feedback.

    zfactor,

    I also have Windows 7 x64, and notice the same as you...

    My previous AV is lighter on my system than Avira Free, but I interested on this new Avira orientation...

    Maybe I will uninstall it for now, and wait some time before try again.

    after the time for startup its really very light. i just removed the beta .350 and installed the release version again, startup time is better than the beta but still FAR to long. i just bought a couple 3pc 1 year lic's to because i did not want to start my 3pc 3year lic's ticking away yet if it was not performing well at this time.

    Well I will volunteer on their forum if they are short on folks to help. I've been on the development team of a couple of security products in the past.

    Anyway, Avira should be the lightest AV out there after the long slow system boot (assuming no Mail+Firewall disble). Avira has a near 0% (0.1%) system drag according to recent tests. AV Comparatives verify Avira as the lightest AV;
    http://www.av-comparatives.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/avc_per_201311_en.pdf

    One of the things I am going to test when I get some time next week is ordering, and prioritizing startup, and resource use to see what can be tweaked. Also I want to log the startup, and find exactly why this is grinding along so bad now at startup.

    Other ways I have found to improve system boot w/Avira;

    I just have the impression that Avira Free is not so responsive as the other AV...

    I will try your suggestions, and I'm sure the coming improvements will be good...

    When will Avira Free have a new Web Shield, instead of Ask Toolbar, if we really need it...?

    It was also stated here that now the free version have the same protection level like the paid versions, but it still has a different frequency updates, so...

    It has been a while since I posted something but have been lurking here for a while. Konichiwa and Aloha!

    Having tested many AVs out there including the free ones, I have no problem to pay for an AV as they need income just like the rest of us. Almost all the free ones come with some bundles or being a guinea pig to improve the cloud structure. The deal maker for me is:

    1. Involvement with your customers. When I see someone very involved on this forum, I know I can count on them rather than a email system which sometimes never gets answered and gets buried. Customer service is more important than having the best AV. Word of mouth is the most valuable type of marketing in this world - more than a resume; more than a company.

    2. No AV is perfect! There is not doubt but when I see the amount of dedication the team is putting and the results show up for the Top 5, I am happy! When someone sends in a false positives or false negatives, it should be added on a reasonable time. Not weeks later. Why even send it?

    3. Pricing - This is always the hardest part. At what price? You mentioned many are taking the free route but someone who wants to support can afford to skip a lunch or dinner. Before I get flamed, how about getting rid of the free but maybe $5 -10/year for 1 user and $30-$50 at most for all computers in a household? There are other things we need to also pay for - backup/sync service, identity theft service, Office, Adobe, the list can go on and on. Smart economics can add to your benefit.

    Travis, I thank you for taking the time to introduce and also bending down to get feedback for your product. Not that many in your position would do this although there was one here, but he was arrogant and strange.

    Stefan, thank you for the long years at this forum and providing us the protection. You are incredible!

    Cheers Avira!

    Personally I would want to advocate adding a real firewall that can filter applications inbound and outbound, just like Avira always had for its suite.

    In truth, I haven't used Avira for some time. Partially because of 'questionable' additions like the ASK toolbar, 'performance improving' software and a few other issues as well.

    Since the competition can use a real firewall in the security suite, why can't Avira ? I presume it's because of 'money'. A firewall just belongs in a security suite. Last time I checked, prices have gone up. For that money, no firewall ?

    i tried to reinstall without the mail filter because some said this was the cause of the slowdown, no luck. in fact i almost think its slower now. i clocked the time from when i see the desktop to when the wifi actually connects and i can start using the system. took almost a full THREE minutes. and then even when the wifi looked to be still searching for connection for about the last 30-45 seconds of that time and the avira umbrella icon was not opened yet (verified by opening avira gui and said it was turned off) i could still go online and browse the web unprotected according to avira since it said it was turned off right in the avira gui.

    this is a major issue imo and one that needs to be looked at ASAP. i can not use it like this i need fast startup times and i even tried it on another system with a ssd installed and it was only about 30 seconds quicker overall (so about 2 full minutes after the desktop shows up could the system be used). then tested on a third system with a normal hard drive like the first one with very similar results took almost three minutes before avira said it was actually turned on (not the windows reporting this im talking about right in avira's gui) and the wifi showed fully connected.

    i would highly recc this be taken care of before anything else imo. i also agree with fly (though i have kind of got over it) being a "suite" to me normally means a included firewall. any av without a true firewall should not be called a suite at all.

    i would be using avira on many machines right now but it seems every time i go to test it out again there is something major stopping me from being able to use it. i love avira and really hope one day soon i can just install it and let it run without testing and issues.

    Try this;

    Uninstall Avira.
    Reinstall it, choosing not to install Mail Protection and Firewall.
    Disable Windows Firewall.

    Now shut down PC, hit the ON button. It should boot very quickly, 10-20 seconds? If not try this;

    Start -> CMD -> type SECPOL, go under Software Restriction Policies, click on Additional, add a New Path Rule, toss in AVNOTIFY.EXE under Disallowed. I've identified a potential hang on boot with AVNotify, but I am not sure why it can happen.

    Now shut down, cold boot, and examine the speed. 10-15 seconds?

    Re-enable features to see how they impact it. Be sure to test from cold shutdown, not restart. I'm going to change various aspects of Avira to see if I can pin it down better, and potentially modify some kernal aspects of Windows. But it's likely something Avira themselves will need to fully address.

    Well so far the worst thing I can find is Avira is using 100% of the HDD I/O for a LONG TIME during boot, passing what appears to be up to 30GB's of data through it.

    What the hell would be causing that? Avira shouldn't even be scanning during boot, and that would appear to be some major scanning activity on boot, otherwise I am unsure why so much data is being accessed by it.

    Cold boots are pretty 'acceptable' now. But restarts are still slow.

    I've given up for now, it appears something that Avira will need to fix. I've done everything I can do, including staging launches on boot, delaying, resource limitations, and more. It's internal to the product at this point.

    Kind of sucks really, hopefully they can patch this soon.
