    I'm uninstalling Norton right now.

In the brief time I had it installed it did seem to be very light. But, of course I did not have it installed long enough to test it adequately. However, from what I experienced, it was a lot lighter than I expected. I have seen a couple of laptops where Norton 360 slowed them down to a crawl, and I had to replace it with another antivirus, so it was good to see Norton Antivirus faring better.

The quick scan took less than 5 minutes to complete, and found no threats. I did a context menu scan of my Downloads folder. The scan speed for extremely slow, and due to it taking so long, I stopped it before completion. Maybe future scans would have been faster. But, to be fair scan times don't really matter too much to mew as it very rare for me to run scans, due to me relying on the on demand protection to catch any threats.

I uninstalled it as it quarantines files without prompting first, both when detected by the on access scanner or when doing an on demand scan. Of course this wouldn't be any issue for many people, but it is for me.

Each to their own, of course, but I've used the last four version from v5 (2011 & NIS '10 before that) through to what is now called v21(2014) of Norton 360 and each has become quicker and lighter. Way back in 2008 - '09 NIS was a pig, but Symantec have refined their product with each new release.

Please check my quick and scheduled full system scans for an example -

    Full System Scan in 9 minutes & 9 seconds.PNG

    Cheers!

I was referring to the on access protection making the computer run painfully slowly, rather than scan times.

On one computer about 3 years ago, I did a clean install of Windows 7 after a hard drive failure. After I installed the very latest of version Norton 360, the computer ran extremely slowly - boot time was a lot longer and Windows ran really slowly. This was a high end laptop with plenty of RAM installed. Last year, a customer gave me two older laptops to fix. Both were running Norton 360. On one laptop which if I memory serves me correctly was running Vista, the computer was running slowly with no apparent cause. After spending hours troubleshooting it, with no luck, I uninstalled 360, and it ran just fine after that. The second laptop was running XP and was not suffering from any obvious slowdowns.

I just briefly tried F-Secure for the very first time. It was causing a very noticeable system impact which is why I am uninstalling it as I type this.

After installing it, when I opened Task Manager, I was witnessing strange behaviour. Running processes would suddenly experience CPU use peaks of around 45-50% for a few seconds. These were not processes associated with F-Secure, but my programs that were already running before I installed F-Secure. After the CPU use for a program returned to normal, immediately another program would experienc the same high CPU use. In many years of testing AVs, I never witnessed behaviour like this before.

I wanted to uninstalled it with Iobit Uninstaller. But it simply would not launch. Disabling real time protection did not help. I looked at the setting for F-Secure and there is a compatibility mode which offers less protection. After enabling it I was able to launch Iobit Uninstaller.

I've got no figures to show you, but I know my two systems feel much lighter / quicker after each new version has been released.

Maybe I've been unlucky. But in the cases I've mentioned, at the time the computers were running the latest version of Norton 360, and the there was a massive slowdown caused by it.

Since you noticed that NAV was "very light", I would ask if you realise that NAV, NIS and N360 all share the same engine? NIS adds a firewall and N360 the utilities.

The very latest version of N360, v21.1.1.7, is the lightest version I've had on my systems yet.

    Cheers!

PS : In my opinion. ;)

I was not aware of that, and have never used N360 on any of my own computers.

I guess it just goes to show, how differently antivirus can work on different systems.

    Hey Securon
Avira antivirus and Comodo Firewall and maybe WSA is all you'll ever need to keep off the pesky virus/bacteria/protozoa etc etc. :D

I've been using that combo for 6 years now.
    WSA for 2 years.

I Keep Windows Defender active so that Windows doesn't complain about not having an antivirus running. Also I just tested some links from MDL and only Windows Defender detected the items that I donwloaded. When I turned WD off only smartscreen filter blocked the items. For me WD doesn't perform so bad like some People say.;)

Very much so. I've had some products run well on 1 machine and not at all on another.

I hate Norton 360 but I am currently testing how NIS 21 (2014) behaves with MBAM Pro (realtime, exclusions set) and they seem to be doing fine. No slowdown at all.

The Windows UI has settings to not complain about not having an AV running.

Good Evening! Rompin...I'm a Montreal Canadiens Diehard Fan...since 1957...If the Canadiens can obtain Jamie Benn who I believe is a Dallas Star...that would be a Major Acquisition...Wistful thinking on my part...with Carey Price in Net...they can reach the second round of playoff's...anyhow I digress, with Webroot and Comodo that's a Playoff Pairing that's sure to eliminate any Malware Contenders. Lol! Sincerely...Securon

Yes exactly, I can't take you guys serious, I'm sorry. I mean, I haven't changed my security tools in 6 years, now that's a setup! :D

Believe it or not, but I just made the switch from Win XP to Win 8.

So I had to say goodby to System Safety Monitor, Neoava Guard and ZoneAlarm (new version sucks), a very sad day! :(
