Thankyou, Ill probably go with FileZilla, from what I can read its the most popular. I was using WSFTP before when I had windows and liked it, so looking for something similar.

Never use SFTP (Simple File Transfer Protocol) as it is unsecure.

If 'WS_FTP' is meant, it offers both FTPS and SFTP afaik. (I mean secure, not simple oc.)

So what is the most secure FTP for Linux? Is it FileZilla or something else?

And what is the best way to set up and use FTP to make it secure?

    Thankyou.

You could try vsftpd, (Very Secure FTP Daemon)

    Not widely used though.
Don't confuse it with the SFTP that is secure (SSH File Transfer Protocol). :)

Thankyou everyone, so of the three recommendations here, lftp, FileZilla and vsftpd, which would should I use? Of the three which is the most secure and stable?

    Hi lucygrl,

According to File Transfer Protocol, FTP was not designed to be a secure protocol—especially by today's standards—and has many security weaknesses.

If your need is to provide a secure ftp service including both a secure ftp server and a secure ftp client, then you need to first read the above linked FTP webpage down through the Security section, and the See Also section at the bottom of the webpage for comparisons of client/server FTP software.

These three are FTP clients. To determine whether the connection/transfer is secure or not, the server side also need to use secure FTP protocols.
Out of the three FTP clients, I would say Filezilla would probably be the best for your need. It's open-source, widely used - this translate to less bugs and security holes.

Is there a front end panel available to vsftpd?

if you are talking about server front-end there is Zentyal. They have a web front end for a bunch of services for a Ubuntu server, also webmin may have one.

Sorry, what I meant was a Graphical user interface. I tried Filezilla but did not like it, too messy. I thought I would try try some other FTP. Im just looking a simple FTP to maintain and update our websites. I use to use WS_FTP before when we had windows. Now im using Linux.

    Hi lucygrl,

At Wikipedia, there is a Comparison of FTP server software linked from the webpage for vsftpd that lists servers with available GUI interfaces.

It appears that OP needs an FTP client. In that case: -http://www.ubuntugeek.com/list-of-ftp-clients-available-in-ubuntu-linux.html

Personally I prefer WinSCP on WINE.

I like FileZilla best, but gftp would be my second choice. You could give that a try.
