Who’s Writing Linux?.

Someone has to, and people don't work for free. The nice visual of volunteers working together, holding hands and being inundated with donations from people who believe in the cause isn't a reality. Of course when corporations are writing and paying for it, you run the risk of ugly things starting to happen.

 

But thanks to it being open source, those "ugly things" that can turn up thanks to corporate coding can be spotted, at least.

There are many other places it can go wrong than just the code. Keeping the code clean is the easy part.

 

Mozilla is a prime example of what happens when you depend on corporate money.

Not all projects are the same. Linux and the kernel are useful for those corporations, so they are contributing to it for their (selfish) reasons. Mozilla on the other hand seems to have adopted an "advertising based" approach; the corporations supporting Mozilla are not doing it because they want to use Mozilla, but because they want Mozilla to help them with their advertising business (see Google deal or the new Tiles idea they came up with).
