Kaspersky is excellent.

I am afraid you have a very simplistic view on AV business... LoL
We are still far away from what you describe. ;)

That is BS. I'm using Kaspersky because i have zero problems with it and i trust the protection. I never choose software just because it's free. If it's free that's good but there are lots of other factors that i have to try and see before i install permanently on my system.

Really? Because it seems to me like a lot of major vendors have been offering free AVs for a while, and they're doing just fine.

If you have money to throw at antivirus software, then keep at it. But I'd argue most people would pick free over paid when the level of protection is very similar.

Of course, because they get enough resources from other sources (retail products / other businesses).
Few kaspersky clones died already in the past years and the ones on the market use their signature base engine and not all the package...
So you can go with free products using KAV engine but you get a different product (not necessarily worst, not necessarily better) than kaspersky retail versions ;)

You may be happy with these different solutions... then amen. Other users may be not!

I don't disagree with that. I'm just saying they could offer a free basic version, like BitDefender does, which would allow them to gain valuable market share that would lead to even higher detection rates (esp. thanks to the cloud). People who want more advanced features like Virtual Keyboard, Parental Control, Anti Spam, Password Manager, Encryption etc. could then opt to pay for the commercial version.
Kaspersky is one of the most heavily pirated AVs out there, and it has been for as long as I can remember. Perhaps offering a free version would help in this regard. I know the Kaspersky team blacklists thousands of pirated keys every day. That can't be cheap.

This has been discussed before, some AV companies already feedback here that free versions are unfortunately not a major driver for users to pay for the full product. So users with free versions are not moving to paid versions... or very few of them.

There are companies that offers free products as a company policy. This choice is not necessarily linked to evident market gains. Detection wise... uuhhm.. again KAV has one of the best detection (see latest and past tests). So, they do not need a free version, their customer base is large enough.

KAV does not offer a free version and still is one of the top three AVs in the market. Pirate KAV versions are a minor nuisance (black listing is largely automated). From the user side these products require constant babysitting for black listed serials / new cracks for each new build/ etc... so, only good for a minority of users (warez fans) but not for the majority of users out there. ;)

Protection is one thing. Low resource usage, low FP's and good user interface is also a must have at least for me.

A few is better than nothing. The vast majority of the free users would probably have not even used the product in the first place were it not free. So ultimately offering a free product is good for the company.
Their market share is relatively small when compared to companies that offer free versions. There's certainly room for improvement, and improvements in market share would inevitably lead to further improvements in detection:

There's a fair amount of automation on the pirate user side as well (e.g. automatic key finders). And converting these pirates to users of a free AV can only be a good thing.

Most free alternatives offer all that. As far as resource usage goes, that's very variable.
Kaspersky has never been light on any of the systems I've had it on.

Unfortunately the quoted statistics do not help much as they mix up free and paid. It is also based on a limited sample and mainly EN language users. AV is a global market not just home or EN. More realistic statistic here: http://www.kaspersky.com/about/news/business/2013/Kaspersky_Lab_reinforces_its_position_in_the_Endpoint_Security_Market
The majority of the users just use what is installed or the free solution that the shop/friend installed to them. And as already said the few are too few ;) Again the users of free version (like you) will simply move from one free version to another. I.e. a lost business for companies that needs money :D

if being free is most important reason for choosing your security do not complain if you have issues with the software or they do let things through that they really shouldn't,the main reason for paying for a product is for the customer support offered if things do go wrong, you cannot expect same support for free software of any type

Please let's not derail this thread into a debate on principles about paid vs. free.

Regarding if customer support is a reason to pay for Kaspersky, I think rather not. For one I consider the providing of up-to-date installation packages a part of customer support and they definitely fail at that, with their installers being weeks behind in patches and some regions getting updates a good while later, just because of the language localization.

Further, from what I've heard, where I am from, they are rather slow to respond and hard to reach. They outsource a lot of that on their community forum, letting users provide support for other users on their own time. Real official technical experts from the company itself are hard to find there as well.

No, I'd definitely not consider buying Kaspersky because of customer support, much rather in spite of. Considering the support of business customers, I have no experience.

I doubt that. Kaspersky offers a very good protection with very low fals positives even if you have lots of keygens and other bad stuff. Only ESET has this low fals positivies if you turn off PUP detection. This is what i really like in Kaspersky.

I have no experience with the business support either, but for the retail home version, no, don't buy it for the support. Some of the worst in the business. Buy it for some of the best detection rates and features in the business. Including one of the best firewalls available in a suite.

Agreed. Their support is lacking, however the product is top notch in detection.

I think Kaspersky is one of the few programs I have actually never tried. It seems for one reaosn or another, I have never been able to catch it at a deal price. The few times I have seen it discounted, I had just recently renewed something else. Its my luck I guess.

Oh I am new here by the way, I have lurked these forums for awhile, but I figured I might as well sign up. so Hi everyone! :)

Does anyone know can US licence be activated in Europe or is it officially blocked? Prices aren't that different so in case you are not buying from random eBay seller there is not much of saving so I don't see a reason why should they block them.

ps. If someone is interested for a trade I'm offering BitDefender AntiVirus Plus 2014 1yr (new/unused) for single KAV 2014 1PC (or 3 for 3) 1yr licence).

No, they cannot be activated. You will probably need to setup a proxy at router level to activate it and then, once activated, it will update/work everywhere.

Maybe. I have heard complaints from those that travel to other countries with Kaspersky products installed and get blacklisted because the license is the wrong region. I would not risk it. Buy the correct license or risk buying it twice.

Should not be the case.. probably a coincidence. They cannot blacklist the key otherwise all workers that need to travel abroad for an extended time will get blacklisted.

I was under the impression that was what happens, but maybe a few angry posts on their forums does not represent the situation in its entirety. I have seen the complaint more than once, but maybe those users didn't have legitimate keys to begin with.

Hi, just buy from our UK/EU store if you want a Kaspersky license which can be activated across Europe: http://store.downloadcrew.co.uk

The UK store also has a wider selection of Kaspersky SKUs.

But, as other users have pointed out, you shouldn't buy a Kaspersky code outside of your region.
