    Correct!

It is 2013. It's interesting that my Avast could update only when I made Online Armor in learning mode otherwise it reported "Server error" at ~20% of program update.

    Why don't you use Firefox?
    What do you use? IE11?

The only downsides that I see in Firefox are the lack of a sandbox and that it doesn't enforce automatic updates. Also, the xss filter is not there yet.

Actually using Hardened Mode in Aggressive works even better.

Moderate -> Automatic deny of every DeepScreen trigger.
Aggressive -> Completelly different, whitelisting approach that pretty much ignores DeepScreen and focuses on whitelisting of apps using digital signatures and cloud.

I'm saying this because i've seen many situations where Moderate mode was constantly blocking suspicious stuff but Aggressive allowed it without any issues. However, Aggressive is more aggressive against unknown unsigned files.

Then if I switch to Aggressive is it OK to leave the DeepScreen ON?

I think you'll still need to leave DeepScreen on because all this goes through it. But you won't get the DeepScreen popups anymore like you do without Hardened Mode. Only a warning when something gets blocked. I was using Aggressive mode on my main system for quite a while now and i rarely got any popups. Mostly only with very new less common apps.

Fair enough. I'll post it up here...

    Your honesty is greatly appreciated.

But did the GUI continue to report "Everything is good" during those backend failures? I'm thinking "yes" as it did in version 8 last year when clients for days at a time couldn't connect to your cloud servers as shown up front by that nice animated graphic.

As you frankly reported here at that time, Avast's cloud services are critical to protection (and to your marketing claims of its superiority over your competition).

In your latest version, the connectivity status has been buried deep in the GUI as a minor text item.

That ploy and an "Everything is good" when the backend is failing (irrespective of local defs/sigs) is the primary reason I dumped Avast.

I posted on the Avast forum about an issue.

Having played with the best free a-vs over the last two weeks I chose Avast because the download speed with web protection is the best.

But one thing I have noticed is when I go to control panel/uninstall a program the program list takes a lot longer to form relative to other a-vs. Why is this? As well as taking time to form the list the mouse goes unresponsive.

    I have a Thinkpad E520, Win7 and i3-2310m 2.1Ghz.

    http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=145401.0

Could you try it and let us know what happened? Report back with different a-vs as well.

I don't like the pop ups at all: Please use grime fighter, please use browser cleaner, please use ...

Best of all: I didn't install that useless tools because I don't need them, so why do I get the pop ups?

I agree. I'm using a paid Pro version and shouldn't be getting ADs. I could almost see getting pop ups on the free version but not paying to get them.

Firefox runs at medium integrity level while IE and Chrome run at low. That said, I am still a Firefox user. So far...

Have you considered submitting this info to Mozilla? Hopefully they are going to implement running FF at low integrity at some point.

No I haven't. Mozilla has a page on their wiki which indicates that they have people looking into it.

Too much maintenance for most folks. Too hard for most of the rest of them. They need to make it work out of the box.

Yeah, way too esoteric for even the likes of me :) Hopefully Mozilla will implement it eventually (without switching to the Chromium engine LOL)

I think I found the options to turn off the useless pop ups. However, that should be disabled by default.

There are no ads what so ever if you turn off the updating popups...

Did you try Avast 2014? I don't know what happened to Avast but these popups are inacceptable. Uninstalled.

Edit: Maybe the popups only appear in the english version and not in the Slovenian.

Avast! Pro isn't free, but it puts out pop ups too. As you say, just click them off or ignore them. There is that one second where you think what now?
