Frankly, I would consider NAV to be better than Avast at detecting viruses, though it is such an incredible resource hog that it is generally not recommended.

Maybe you should think about getting a real antivirus? :p

And what is a real antivirus to you? Nod32?

Don't really understand all the fuss about Nod32, just because Nod32 is the fastest gun in the West, does not mean it's the best!!!!!!
I find it very overrated, mainly beacuse of it's speed.
How often do you need to scan your whole system if you have a good and updated AV scanner? I scan my system just once after installing a new AV scanner and that's it. Keep it fresh and that should do the trick and there are more 'good' scanners.......come on now!

If you forget to configure Nod32 properly (I think you should not be able to forget...........) it misses a lot. Take Panda Titanium, don't bother about forgetting about heuristcs etc......it's standard!!!!!!!

    Pigman,you better do! :p ;)
No,really,Norton really cannot be compared with avast! in any way. Its simply too lame(even for avast! Home Edition). I mean weekly LiveUpdate updates!? C'mon, avast! usually updates at least 2-3 times per week or even 3-4 times in one day. I had to download manual packages every day for damn NAV to have it up to date. Also NAV is a real resource hog with hundreds of processes connecting everywhere... No real control over detected files (i mean Automatic can erase false positives like mad and you can't do anything, other options are there just because they didn't know where to put them),screws whole registry even if you uninstall it),interface requres ActiveX,and from my user base reports misses bunch of ITW nasties (scrw VB100% if it cannot detect malware on real machines with real users),especially trojans where avast! isn't so weak.

I bet Symantec programmers are capable of making something much better then any other AV on the market, but their marketing sector apperantly sends all users where sun doesn't shine (too often ;) ) and demand programmers to make clone of the clone with minor changes every year (NAV1999-2005).
No thanks. Use avast!/AntiVir/NOD32/KAV/F-Prot/AVG/F-Secure/Norman and so on instead.

dear putin, Pigman never mentioned NOD32. i don't know anything about this REAL antivirus. all those products i know catches viruses so they all should be real antiviruses. i think Pigman was just trying to irritate RejZor as his loyality is very wellknown. if you want to know the real deals about NOD32 just use the trial version.

dear RejZor, AVAST catches more viruses than NAV? Clementi's test says the opposite, even in the trojan-backdoor section. NAV misses ITW bugs? now this is new for me. i *wonder* what your SIGNATURE means RejZor :)

When people say "real", it doesn't refer to NOD, just to any decent AV. It could be Panda Titanium for all I care (though Panda is far from being the best out there).

As for NOD, it is very, very good at detecting viruses. It also is fairly poor at detecting trojans. Every AV has its weak point, but some AVs have bigger weak points than others. With NAV, the weak point is bloat; with Avast, the weak points are lack of heuristics and crappy virus detection (just compare its results on Rokop tests to those of almost any commercial AV).

And yes, I suppose I am guilty of pulling RejZor's chain. Sorry. ;) But seriously, Norton does outperform Avast at virus detection. I wouldn't recommend it, though, because it is an expensive, bloated monster, and because there are equally good (and better) AVs out there for lower prices and with lower resource consumption. (NOD. Dr Web. KAV. Command. F-Prot. GDATA. BitDefender. You get the idea.)

Hey i don't say avast! is perfect. Its far from that, but i saw too many cases when normal users got infected even they were using NAV. I recommended them to try avast! and after they made a full scan, lots of stuff was detected. This is proof worth more then any synthetic test where you throw samples to AV.

NAV would be a very good antivirus if Symantec programmers would optimize the code a bit to decrese CPU and memory usage, pack some unneeded processes into less of them (who needs 8 processes only for AV!?) and regular LiveUpdates that would be performed at least 3-4 times per week or more if necessary(why the hell do you need to download stand alone updates if you want to be up to date!?,Auto-Updaters should do this, they even have incrimental updates so this shouldn't be a problem).
Removing ActiveX interface would be optional.

NAV usually missed things just because it was not up-to-date just with LiveUpdate which was sometimes even 5 days behind stand alone updates!

If they manage to fix all this i'll get NAV asap (they already fixed majority of uninstall issues in NAV2005b). But until then, there is lots of other better AVs.

It seems that you don't like the way how i write whats on my mind :(

dear RejZor, sometimes antivirus A picks up a keygen and marks it as security threat where antivirus B ignores it. in reality the keygen is just an illegal program not having any malicious code. this is just an example right so don't argue about infected keygen. OK now would you consider antivirus A to be better than antivirus B? now if you won't tell us what were those bugs missed by NAV or was the NAV updated then how can we consider your statement? i agree 100% that NAV is a bloatware but i don't think it really missed any ITW. maybe it wasn't updated or maybe the users were not well-informed. anyway i hope your suggestions will be picked up by some Symantec hotshot. meanwhile i'm keeping my fingers crossed for that new AVAST. hope it'll consume less memory.

Don't remeber their names exactly, but they were manly trojans (no avast! doesn't detect keygens and similar stuff,NAV2004 does) and few worms.
It can't be up-to-date if its updated only once per week don't you think?
I really hope Symantec guys will notice my post. The program itself is fine, they just need to fine tune it.
How do you mean lower memory usage for avast!? Its not so high. I agre, every MB of free mem is better, but right now it consumes 14MB on my system. Very reasonable memory usage.

Reasonable memory usage if you have half a gig of RAM, RejZor. And it cuts performance on Win9x no matter how much RAM you have.

It ain't bloatware, but it's not as good as AVG or AntiVir in the resource department.

Btw i'm using 512MB which is standard in these days, but it works the same on 128 and 256MB systems...

    Hi guys :)

I have downloaded Avast! but have not installed it yet. (I am currently using a trial version of the latest NAV Professional edition). I have read all the posts in here and now I'm a little confused on which anti-virus to use. I know everyone has their own preferences, but I really need some suggestions on which programs would be worth trying (and links to where I could get these programs would be greatly appreciated ).

    Thanks for any suggestions! :)

i agree with Pigman, AVAST slows down my 9x system and i have 256MB SDRAM in it. i used keygen as an *example* geez do i have to spell it out everytime? maybe they weren't that much of a threat, those trojans and worms, we'll never know. so why should we jump into conclusion? RejZor still didn't answer my question. anyway those skinny things adds more MBs and i think people should use the advanced interface anyway. so cutting down weirdness of the advanced interface and doing away with those skins will get AVAST some cheers.

dear mismis29, as you've downloaded AVAST then not using it won't be nice. after your trial is over with NAV you can try AVAST. as you already know everyone has their own preferences who knows you might prefer AVAST. just make sure NAV is totally eradicated from your system before installing AVAST. as for more links you can ask our linkman ronjor. give us your machine configuration and we can suggest some too.

Geez doh if you'd read my post more accurately you'd notice this line:
...no avast! doesn't detect keygens and similar stuff...

It sounds like another call for corporate products in consumer hands. (Though you have to wonder why they think the consumer version is fine the way it is. Bad focus groups perhaps.) In any case, you would think Symantec would have a plan ready to switch to more frequent updates first, but apparently it doesn't look like it. I have a feeling Symantec will only switch to daily updates (or do anything drastic), when their biggest competitor money-wise does (McAfee).

Well daily updates are fine. Most of AVs update this way. Unless there is certain outbreak they update definitions more often that day.
