@noone_particular: Thanks :thumb:. I always get d4dcf6902bb66ab105 here, whether it's on my real computer or my virtual machine.

More results from others would be appreciated.

This is making less sense by the minute. The above results were with the original filters that remove the text, whether active or not.
I loaded the Sidki set. After trying again, I looked for the entry you asked for. It isn't there. There's no mention of an Etag in the cache anywhere, but the text is displayed.

If I read it right, the page says the tracker is in the eyeball image. To make this even stranger, with the original filters, that image is present but the tracker fails. With the Sidki set, there's no image but the tracker works.

This is giving me a headache.

    Me too.

Also, if anyone can download the tracker image (the eye) and reports its MD5 hash, that would be appreciated also. Mine is 313DCFD10339B79A5205B5E93F285392. I want to see if yours is different from mine.

    Thanks :). That's what I suspected. I think post #24 explains what's happening.

I've been there a couple dozen times so far with 2 different browsers. Still shows me at 2 visits. Being this IP is also a Tor exit, I wonder if that's messing up some of the results on my end.

I've had the site text set on one computer retrieved on a different computer, both using the same IP.

I think that test is implemented in a way that is bound to confuse people who haven't reviewed the source, particularly https://github.com/lucb1e/cookielesscookies/blob/master/index.php#L15.

Although it mentions a test that doesn't revolve around using IP Address or browser headers such as User-Agent, the server actually does use both of those to generate your unique identifier. The unique identifier is used for the etag value and testing, and it is also used as a filename for the server-side storage of visit/test information. IOW, even if you aren't sending etag information to the server it will still be able to recall some information for your IP Address and User-Agent pair. Plus, there is an issue with the way the etag test is handled... "the chicken and egg problem" mentioned in the "Technical stuff" section of the test page... but better understood via source.

It's definitely caching something at the website. If I run Firefox within Sandboxie using a Ramdisk, then delete the contents of the sandbox after closing the browser, the website is still recording my previous visit details.

@TheWindBringeth: Thanks for digging into the source code :thumb:.

There's an easy-to-understand explanation of what an ETag is at hxxp://www.blangdon.com/writing/about/cookieless-user-tracking/ . So it makes sense that noone_particular and I would have different ETags for the exact same tracker image if the public IP address is being used to construct the ETag.

Yes, I get the same with Chrome under SBIE. SBIE deleted everything when I shut down Chrome, I ran CCleaner, reset computer (to clear RamDisk) and still got the message. They must identify us by our IP or something similar.

I don't think for advertisers is really about you as an individual, but more about relevant statistics that can be made based on your habits. It's called Fingerprinting a user and they don't even need any cookies or anything from your computer. The more unique we wish to be the more identifiable we become.

Might sound weird, but the solution for non-traceability is Mediocrity:).

    Check this this out: http://fingerprint.pet-portal.eu/
