Kaspersky is excellent.

Well despite being great in most tests, it doesn't seem very popular at Wilders, any reasons, bugs, system impact?

 

I myself have never really Used it. But If I had to guess I would say System Impact as I set up my brothers Computer with KIS 2010 a few years ago and it slowed the system down to a crawl.

 

I have never used it mostly because there hasn't been any free version of it, and thru the years, there were always plenty of other free alternatives that seemed to be nearly as good. I did use the ZoneAlarm Antivirus + Firewall suite for a while recently just to try it out, and I understand it uses a Kaspersky engine, never had any issues with it, seemed very light, etc. But aside from that, I have no real experience with the Big K.

 

Funny this topic surfaced...I just installed KIS and it seems to run lighter than the last time I tried it. Will run with it a while...after cleaning all of the Norton and Avast tracks, it seems pretty slick. No slam on either NIS or AIS, just try to keep everything clean. Still have a KIS license from a discount sale 6-7 months ago.

 

Really what happened to WSA?

I think I tried it at least twice, Osaban, and as I recall, it was system impact that made me remove it very quickly.
It is definitely in the upper echelon of antivirus programs, but it does have a bit of a rep for being sluggish.

 

There is no denying that Kaspersky provides great protection. It always runs light for me as well. I have a KIS license that is good until May but I don't have it installed at the moment. Somehow, I find that I like ESET better.

I think what is bothers me most about KIS is that it wants to use numerous browser plugins. Also, their SafeMoney secure banking function does not function properly for me. I need to check to see if they have issued a new release lately that might fix some of the problems. Kaspersky tends to release products that still have known issues and then fix them via updates.

Of course, for those who really like to over analyze things, there have long been questions about whether Eugene Kaspersky and his company have too close of ties with the Russian government. I think the same questions can obviously be asked of American antivirus companies, so I don't know how much weight to give that information. Given all the information we know about the NSA, I might be inclined to trust a Russian security company more than an American one.

Thanks for posting a comment about Kaspersky. I think I am going to dust off my license and see if they have made any changes in the areas that I had problems with. You sure cannot beat their detection and protection.

 

Over-analysis aside, I'd have to admit that this has been a concern of mine from time to time when considering Kaspersky. I can't even say I have examined it in any great detail... it's just something that is out there and doesn't go away.

 

KAV v2014 is exceptionally light and fast on my Win8.1 desktop and laptop computers, I mean their antivirus-only version 14.0.0.4651(d)

 

My biggest issue with using Kaspersky is slow boot times. Granted, I'm a freak about any slowdowns of any type and that fact has partly influenced my decision to run WSA Complete with Privatefirewall. That's it! My boot times are lightning fast with no negative impact on system resources. It also matters that I took the time to learn how WSA actually works and I believe in it. Other than that I run Malwarebytes once a week and never an infection in three years on 4 machines. The other issue that doesn't really bother me but I've had a lot of people get frustrated with is the Kaspersky "remove incompatible apps" process which depending on what they have on their machine, could be a mile long. Some people bail right there.

For me KIS application control interferes when uninstalling or upgrading software resulting in failures. When I right click and select application reputation sometimes it is unable to connect to its servers which I think is the cause for such problems.

 

i agree with both of you. regardless what tests say i have had way to much system impact in various areas with kis. the last time i used kis on a regular basis was in 2009 when i at that time switched to the newer nortons that had just came out and at that time kaspersky did not have as much slowdown. but even then the switch to norton showed a huge performance gain. ever since then imo kis has gotten heavier and heavier. 2014 is a step in the right direction i have to say its a bit lighter than last year but still imo to heavy. i also notice a big slowdown on bootup and especially when browsing the internet

 

My friend buyes KIS for years on an old laptop - no lags. When i try its trials or betas it feels light as well.

 

I'm not an avid fan of Kaspersky, but there are similar rumors about every other AV anyway. Besides, negligence and incompetence are far bigger problems than that because at least you'll know where the "danger" is coming from otherwise. I'd take a good product even if it spies on everyone over an inept one that can blow up my computer at any time or let it get blown up.

 

It's came out on top in two recent UK tech magazine AV roundups (PC Pro and Computeractive). Avast Free won the recommended free AV award and Kaspersky the overall winner.

 

I have had no real issues with Kaspersky.My boot times with it are actually consistently better,albeit marginally, than with the WSA Privatefirewall combo I use on my 3rd machine.I do not install a lot of software and leave my pc on all the time,so boot times aren't a huge factor for me anyways.I use Kaspersky along with WSA(with exceptions set up in KIS just in case) on this machine and have no issues at all to report at this time.I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who didn't like the idea of my first choice for installs which is WSA/Privatefirewall.

 

But there aren't any good deals and discounts of Kaspersky to bad

 

In Europe I can get licenses on ebay from 8€ (KAV 1PC) to around 20€ (KIS 3PC) from reputable powersellers. I have done so in the past and they always worked like a charm.

If you ask yourself how this is possible. License codes are usable for versions one year in the past and three years in the future. So if I buy a 2011 license, I can activate products from 2010 to 2014. This is where the powersellers come into play. They buy old boxed versions from retailers, which can no longer be put on the shelf, because the new version has been released and is replaced by the new boxes. The license codes in the old boxes however are still viable.

So if I need a license to activate a German version of KAV 2014, all I need is an old unused license for KAV 2011 from Poland, Italy or elsewhere in Europe.

 

Sure there are? What sort of of 'good deals' do you mean? Anything around 50% or so is a very excellent deal to me.

 

Not any more you can't. With Kaspersky 2014, it only accepts 2012 codes or higher.

 

It's getting about the time where the annual KIS release starts to get in good shape. It has always taken several patches from the 201x release in the summer to get a product thats benefits outweigh the assorted bugs IMO.

I don't use real time blacklisters anymore but Kaspersky was my favourite when I did. Part of the reason I moved off and found the wonders of a lighter world without them was I believe Kaspersky's release schedule and development priorities are decided by the marketing guys rather than the techies. Great detection but a bug list that would choke most development teams doesn't work for me.

Because of my previous affection for them I do go back and have a look occasionally. I have done so recently with patch D for the latest release and it has little visible effect on the speed of operations on my Win 8.1 x64 laptop but disc activity and CPU utilisation are higher than I'd like.

The PC starts up really quickly compared to previous versions and in about the same time as running without any AV but don't be fooled by the K showing in the task bar. It takes an age for the application to initialise once the PC is up and running.

The choice of options to tweak the settings is reducing each release but with this one you can still change the default HIPS level for unknown applications and with Application Control set to block unknown you get a good blacklister with an intelligent anti-executable for stuff not known to the KSN. On the suite the Firewall blocks rather than stealths ports. Makes no difference to me but some don't like it. Other than that it is the best firewall of the big vendors IMO.

Kaspersky protection is excellent. They have a range of built in goodies that really help with safe banking, preventing exploits and recognising and blocking new and unknown threats but that comes at a cost for me.

If they could give us the December/January version as the first release a lot of those concerns would be gone and I'd recommend it to those who like everything in the one place security.
