Oh. Interesting. Now we might start to see some better detection out of Avast. Might be time to put on the AIS.

It's all nice, but i'd like to see DynaGen up and running. That will actually bump up the detection significantly and make the DeepScreen truly shine.

  7. I either put on the free F-secure version of the local ISP or the free version of AVAST on friend's computers when they don't have internet package which offers free F-secure through the cable company

:thumbd: Some people are so stupid that they won't continue the annual free prolongation of Avast. I could have known that people having outdated 90 day pre-installs of paid products won't update their free AVAST neither. I rather have AVAST implement automatic prolongation in stead of user initiated continuation. I know no program can compensate user stupidity and the annual prolongation offers a paid update chance, but still for some security illiterates it would be better ...

I was called today to a friend telling me his PC ran very slow, I told him to go to a PC repair shop, unfortunately my wife threatened to punish me when I would not help this friend (we are coming over for a coffee, Kees will have a look while we .., no problem at all). Turned out they had a virus due to outdated yearly AVAST Free.

:thumb: On the bright side I did some tests and the Web Shield has improved dramatically in terms of overhead and performance. Not using an AV myself, I completely missed info on this. Anyone know what has been changed?

Haha lol. That's the thing when you become the tech person and help other people with their computers. It can take up a lot of time, and they expect you to help, so when you don't want to they can become angry. I still help out friends and family, but I've gradually lowered the time I put into it.

Avast should really make the free version auto-renew, the yearly renewal gives too much trouble.

It does auto-renew after a certain amount of time has elapsed since expiration.

    @Windows_Security: You're welcome :).

Are you sure? I've never heard of anything like this. Neither anyone from avast! team confirmed such feature. Would be nice if it's true though. Because i stopped installing avast! on systems that aren't under my constant supervision.

I've personally seen it, yes. I think the expiration period (period without protection) was a few days. Then the new license after that was not for a year, but much shorter, perhaps a month. So after a month (or whatever), then another few days (or whatever) without protection, and so forth. So after the initial expiration, the user is without protection maybe 10% (3/30 days in a month) of the time.

  13. With this particular friend, I have made this deal:

    a) Never use Firefox again
    b) Never disable UAC again, removed user rights to change UAC registry settings with ACL (set UAC to default)
    c) Set Avast hardened mode to moderate

As said I can understand Avast for having this yearly 'upgrade' opportunities. Users have their own responsibility IMO, I also agree with Rezjor being the 'most' used AV (with MSE) they have some sort of public responsibility to protect the foolish users also.

Still sounds like a very stupid and unnecessary process. Why not just extend it for another year? It's free anyway, so why complicate things?

Yeah, as usually Avast installs very smooth. :thumb:

Does Avast beta updates its program further to usual versions?

    ATM there's mainstream (9.0.2011)
    & betastream (9.0.2010, 9.0.2012)

ergo, 9.0.2011 will not offer an upgrade to 9.0.2012, but 9.0.2010 will.

In principle, yes. It will offer you whatever main sub-version becomes the next 'official' release. It could be 2013, 2014 or any subsequent number.
