And if they got rid of all the Metro nonsense and Metro apps.

Start menu, reverse some of the explorer changes & return of Aero on the desktop would do me, I have tried to like Win 8x but I cant shake the feeling they took the beautiful looking OS that was Win 7 & slapped it with the ugly stick, paused for a bit then kept on hitting it with the ugly stick

Good Morning! Threshold...to What! Many consumers Patience Threshold...has been met with Mind Meld Marketing Techniques...by the Jolly Ideas Purveyors at Redmond. I and countless others are of the belief that the Tile...Touch...Territory should be the Exclusive Target Market Domain of The Tablet...Smart Phone...and Phablet User. Had Microsoft catered to it's Main Market being the Desktop Market...and improving the Windows 7...Wow experience...Minus Tiles...then it would have shown a Win...Win...Attitude. Hopefully Windows 9 will incorporate a return to it's Primary User. Sincerely...Securon

Do people only want cosmetic changes to expect in the next releases? I mean, no love for security? No hug?

Are there specific security features you would like to see implemented in the next version of Windows?

    Application sandboxing.

I know it's still too early to expect, and it surely will annoy lots of software developers, especially security software. But what I wish to have is some sort of a LUA sandbox for all user space apps. We all know that everyone ignores LUA. So why don't they just enforce it (and make it even more limited if it doesn't break things up too much)? You know, like Android. But I'm not sure if it requires them to re-write the OS from zero. :doubt:

Also, I don't know if it's possible to implement even stronger exploit mitigation techniques. But if they could, then :thumb: . Give AppLocker to whoever has access to GPE but without its design holes, fix that upgrading mechanism, and ta-da! Better OS for security... sort of.

Modern (aka Metro) apps are sandboxed apps which run under the AppContainer IL. Not to mention the underlying kernel is more secure. There's a PDF file on the subject...

There's quite a number of improvement in Windows 8 but unfortunately the presentation layer 'Metro' gets the most 'love' by the public. Win9 surely would turn out interesting.

USA still the best. But barely.
MS should bite the bullet with 9. Ms should roll their own Linux Distro. Make it look like Windows & have a built in WINE functionality.

I dont like "modern" metro apps. They are a joke that I wont touch with a 10 foot pole.

I guess I'll be alone in defending the new Start screen + Metro apps, but here goes - I think they serve a valuable purpose, and the intention is good but execution in Win 8 is awful.

Very curious to see how much they can accomplish in 1 year, frankly its not possible to do much in such a short time. Win 8 is a major OS upgrade, almost everything about is overlooked and ignored due to Start+Metro.

Not sure if you're joking? I rather hope so, because that would be an incredible waste. The Windows NT kernel has some real advantages over Linux (e.g. realtime capability that isn't a total kludge). Never mind that the Linux userspace is in a constant state of flux.

Re security features, I would really like to see OS level virtualization (like jails or VServer/OpenVZ) on Windows.

I meant all apps, not just Metro apps. That's why I said it'll annoy security software developers. Their software won't have enough rights to go beyond the limit, ever.

It's more welcome news than what we've seen the last couple of years, agreed. We'll see what actually comes from it before too long.

TweakGuides linked to an opinion piece by Stardock's CEO Brad Wardell over at Neowin, where he points out some of the recent missteps by MS and what he learned from Build Day 2. It doesn't sound like he's holding much back with his criticism of what they've done. :D

Any info about AppLocker? I can only find things about UI experience and licensing model.

Linux will always lag behind when it comes to games, or Photoshop, etc.

    I use a flight sim called X-Plane.
it is cross-platforms and yes, you can play it natively on Linux.

but guess what, most addon devs for X-Plane will only release their addons on Windows, and then maybe Macs.
    same old story.
they don't bother porting their addons/plugins to Linux because of the low market share.
it's just not worth their time.

If they will introduce new start menu in Windows 9, we can't expect it to be released with Windows 8(.2) as next update? I was hoping to get it on Windows 8 also.
