Kind of a tongue and cheek topic, but with some level of seriousness because I really want to know the answer, or at least - understand the purpose of it..

I noticed F-Secure uses 666 everywhere. The web-installer for F-Secure accesses an IP address with 666 in the directory structure.

In Regedit, I noticed almost all of the F-Secure entries have 666 attached to them.

When I check F-Secure processes, they are tagged with 666 in their program ID, and AppNames.

    http://startups.glarysoft.com/F-Secure Hoster (666)/fshoster32.exe/76444/

Anyone have any idea why F-Secure seems to enjoy using 666 in their products as much as possible? Not that it really bothers me either way - they are just numbers, but I find it a little bit odd that a company would identify themselves with this set of numbers, and use them so prevalently? If I was superstitious, or Christian, I suspect it might be a little more bothersome. But I have no interest in any philosophical discussion of the number, only why F-Secure might be using it so much?

    Thanks.

If you really is serious about this then perhaps you should research all the software in your Sig as well there may be some 666 in them too :)

I used to be a Christian.

    I used F-Secure for awhile.

    Now I'm a Satanist.

I was wondering how that happened..

I can post some screenshots later, I unisntalled F-Secure to run some tests, and need to reinstall it to get some screenshots. I didn't save them. But anyway, they are pretty easy to find - literally everywhere in F-Secure there are the triple sixes. Registry, ProgramID's, WebInstaller, etc. Not sure if they have a reason for it, or if there is a significance for it. Simply wondering why they are there.

Also, this isn't encouraging.. F-Secure update servers are hosted on US-Govt IP addresses, and the updater also 'polls' a known tracking company from Israel (MediaFire). Why? These are the IP addresses hit during 'updating' with F-Secure (and nothing else happening on the system, clean test box).

    Interesting..

It's not going anywhere, just like all religious and political discussions. Stagnant. I have to appreciate the OP at least for highlighting the logical part though. I wonder what's the connection between F-Secure and MediaFire (if it's the MF I'm thinking, that file sharing/uploading service).

Please don't turn it religious, or political, that's not the intention.

What do you expect? That's what you get when you mention anything about Satan. :p

Oh, I feel slightly disappointed with that.

    Yes master.

But anyway, there must be a logical explanation about this. Anyone got info about this MediaFire tracking company and its possible relation with F-Secure? Or is it just a trivial issue?

    Possible logical explanations after much consideration;

    1) Using 666 is sort of a 'rebellious' statement, edgy, and some think cool sounding. But to have a commercial product use this for this reason would be odd no?

    2) Linux 666 is chmod 666 or 'satan command'. Possibly a carry over from the Linux versions?

Curious to hear what F-Secure has to say, but my ticket wasn't answered (maybe they thought I was joking?)

Possible. But they're just numbers, as you said. Perhaps the same reason as Avira's Luke Filewalker or Microsoft's Dr. Watson debugger.

    My bet goes onto this.

BTW, are you sure it's MediaFire or is it Media Force? Your SS says Media Force. Is it this one?

I don't use their products, but I would not at all be surprised if someone handling that part decided to have a little fun. :D

Apparently they have a slow response when fixing False Positives
So maybe they know how to trick/adjust to a test for winning awards with 3rd party engines
Definitely a pact with the devil

I bet you mean Deepguard FPs, because they're quite good at fixing signature-based FPs.
Not sure you're being serious, but what about other buggier, heavier and weaker BD-based products with nothing useful in-house whatsoever (I exclude Emsi and 360)?

Not only DeepGuard FPs, as the URL Advisor is also imprecise
Take for example GDATA, the BB is very limited to exploit detection only

Emsisoft is a curious case, as the On Demand test from march reveals close to 30 FP more than BitDefender,,,,, How could the detection quality be tampered?

It might well be true, but I still think if they didn't care about FPs, they wouldn't even have done such a good job at fixing the signature-related ones.
If F-Secure is "evil" for its FPs, then what's that make G**** with its bugs, resource hogging, self-aggrandizing on top of extremely poor zero-day detection and customer service?
They cut corners so much they care about their customers, quickly fix bugs and even end up with fewer FPs than BD itself in September.

PS: Bullguard is meant to be good, but them licensing everything could be put down to a desire to get acclaim the easiest way.
