MBAM 2.00 Beta Released.

MBAM is known to concentrate on all kinds of malware that many AVs tend to miss or find hard to clean up thoroughly and is meant to supplement anti virus applications.

There are currently remarkably few compatibility problems between MBAM and the popular AVs, and the few there are are usually easily fixed by setting exceptions.

AFAIK, the MBAM research team adds detection for ALL current malware encountered or submitted, including viruses.

Today, more AVs concentrate on zero day malware. Many are performing very well against 0 day malware as tested by Av-Test.

 

Absolutely, and good for them (as well as for us)! However, that does not change my premise at all.

 

It would be what we call layered defense as many of us run SpywareBlaster and or a Hosts file in tandem with our anti-virus solution, as examples.

 

I run MBAM in real time with Avira Antivirus Suite with no exceptions set and no problems.

 

Same for Avast and WSA (at the same time).

What I'm worried about is the lack of Eicar detection. What are we supposed to test with then? I know there are alternatives, but I would like an official recommendation, especially for less experienced users.

 

I have bought a license on 7/21/2010 and another 1 on 6/4/2011......does that count also?

 

I've been trying to persuade them to change their mind about not detecting the EICAR test files just because they're not malware... Maybe they will some day

My idea.
I really wouldn't appreciate it, if not optional, it makes for a cluttered GUI and poor esthetics and when I've just bought a product, I don't want to see 'Buy moar!' immediately.
While I never actually watch a scan, I do care about how a GUI looks.
MBAM is blue, white, some black, something calm and collected.
What's with the big exlamation mark and large use of red and green? Nice for the afficionado of brutal complementary colors perhaps but imao, a serious eye sore.

Besides the *itching and moaning, congrats on the new version Marcin and all.
Been using it since years, one of the few security programs in willing to spend $$ on (and advice others to do so).
Any idea when you guys will be able to offer information on how other stuff (like MBAE) will be incorporated/offered in the new pricing model?

If they do, i guess removal capability will still be free . . . am i right?

I hope they dont remove the free version because if they do, i think i might grab a license because they are still selling v1 licenses which are still lifetime for v2.

I would have to agree. I can take that as a first time fee (though somewhere around $14.99 would be more appropriate), but I sure hope there will be renewal discounts. I wouldn't pay more for it than I pay for my AV suite.

 

Keep in mind that, in contrast to the old lifetime license, the new yearly license is 3-pc. Official prices for 3 pc AV license are usually more expensive.

That's the first time fee (and it's actually $39,99 for avast), not to mention you get discount if you buy more than one year or more licenses. On renewal, you get a 50 - 70% discount and if you have >10 licenses and haggle a bit, you can get even better deals.

 

No, it isn't; according to their site it really is $43.99 (3 PC's, 1 year)

MBAM already has discounts for multiple licenses. I'm sure it will be the same for the new version, and I there could very well be some kind of renewal deal as well.

Right now you don't know, and neither do I, so why not wait until the final version actually comes out...

 

Avast shows $54.99 $43.99 for me. I previously had Kaspersky and Eset licenses, but renewal discount was never that high for me, more like 10-30%. Perhaps if you have >10 licenses, but that's only a small minority of the users.
Besides, we don't know how Malwarebytes is going to handle multiple/longer licenses and renewals until those new licenses are available for purchase.

Putting all that aside, if you want cheap prices, you can usually find huge discounts on the net for AV's, including for MBAM.

 

The site is often out of date. If you click through to the store, you get the correct price.

But the point is moot anyway. For now we simply don't know what deals MBAM will be offering on the new version.

In the end it really boils down to whether an effective second layer of defense is worth a relatively modest amount of money to you at all...
