Sandboxie Acquired by Invincea

Well, I try to see the trend before predicting.

 

Yeah, probably not too many enjoy a bad change.
I'm trying to take it in stride as best as I can. I do feel glad for tzuk. I am not, however, overly optimistic for the future of Sandboxie. Just my opinion.

 

Hopefully Ronen Tzur has received a huge sack of money, sufficient for him and a next generation.
Awesome application.
Let's see if Invincea can and will offer the same hands-on approach as 'Tzuk', to both the program and the community.

 

Invincea made some noice in 2010 with their browser in a virtual box (with stripped down OS), called browser deflection shield or invincea browser protection or something like that. Al those sandboxie fans wanting a enterprise ready solution (for when memory serves right heafty 60 dollar per desktop/seat per year).

 

The problem to many of us, I included, is that there is no alternative to SBIE as a light virtualization app with endless configuration options.
If they change the product the lifetime license will became useless even if it remains active.
The only alternative I see for my use is a HIPS, Comodo or Online Armor style... but then again I came to Sandboxie from exactly those solutions.

 

Interesting perspective. I've been using SBIE for....something like 4 years now. Maybe longer. I first started out using it solely for browser protection. Over time, I expanded my usage by sandboxing lots of apps, particularly multi-media stuff. I have about a dozen such sandboxes...and I'm sure that there are lots of other users with tons more sandboxes than that on their systems.

The latest versions of SBIE (version 4 and up) break some the apps that I use...and tzuk hasn't shown much interest in fixing them. So I've remained fairly content sticking with v3.74, which causes no conflicts for me.

Still, if Invincia migrates Sandboxie away from the virtual environment concept that some/many of us rely on to test and sandbox lots of apps, then it will be a sad day. I guess I'll need to learn more about Virtualbox.

 

I'm glad that Sandboxie is providing Tzuk with the reward for all his hard work and I wish him the very best of luck, whatever he chooses to do; he's been the absolute model developer.
To be selfish though, I am hoping though that my lifetime licence will still remain valid

If anything,sandboxie being acquired by a company will make this program better.

I dont believe ronen is going under as you put it.

Nobody has been "bought out."...,this was what appears a freewill decision by ronen himself.

Sandboxie under the supervison of Invincea will bring fresh ideas to the sandboxie table and sandboxie in the long run will benefit immensely.

 

I know old friend. I hope for our sake that your predictions aren't coming true.

 

As of now, very little is publicly known about the future direction of Sandboxie.
At the worst, SBIE will become another abandoned or poorly modified application that lends to the 'what could have been' mindset.

I can't believe that will happen. Invincea must realize the value of this great app and the future possibilities or (they) wouldn't have acquired it and kept the developer on-board. To look at the bright side, Sandboxie wasn't bought out by Symantic.

Even in the worst of possible scenarios, we still have the current versions and know they will work within the stated parameters for years to come. Perhaps this acquisition will lead to new incarnations such as a SBIE/Invincea browser and/or e-mail client; perhaps a version for Mac or even Linux.

Let's wait and see what Invincea does with the possibilities.
Meanwhile (just in case...), download the installers for every version you believe you might need in the future.

 

I do not see how this is a large surprise. Corporations are buying up small timers and specialized software vendors left and right these days. I see Sandboxie as going away in its current form and being integrated with another product. But I have been wrong before. Regardless, I am sure Tzuk was well paid and likely has received more money than he ever made or would have made through yearly and the old lifetime licenses.

 

Remember about GesWall or ThreatFire? It makes sense to worry about the future development of Sandboxie if we see those examples. But let's all hope that you're right and Invincea will keep Sandboxie to be as great as now at least, both for the program itself and the support.

Companies like Avast show how money can still be made by offering a solid free product, and Webroot who have improved PrevX to make it an even better paid product.

But I'm wondering how long it will be before product updates to the free version will just cease.

I agree with the BoClean analogy. The handwriting is on the wall. SBIE is awesome but it's a niche product. Anything beyond a one person shop will not put the effort into it that it deserves/requires. Or they'll "improve it" into an early grave.

This all said, I hope Ronen personally does well by this. He deserves it. Thank you Ronen!

 

Unfortunately, I say this... if there was truly good news in the wings, why would we be asked to wait and be patient, especially given the fact that the sale took place earlier this year?
What's up with an announcement, so long after the fact, that still leaves questions?
Not ideal, the way I see it.

One bad news to read.

I was sort of expecting this to happen as the developer needs to earn his living too. The new W8+ system causing much work and what with the demise of the Windows operating system to the tablet users. It was I guess the right time to sell.

 

My guess is that it was under wraps either because of contract clauses or Tzuk was waiting to come up with a way to say it without scaring users to death. Corporate buyouts of favored vendors or products is inevitably going to make people sweat or become angry. As I said earlier, I believe the days of Sandboxie as a standalone product are numbered. But no one but Tzuk or Invincea knows the truth. When either party comes out and tells us, we'll know.

 

I have a feeling DefenseWall is next.....
Don't forget about GeSWall either......also bought and forgotten.....
