Any opinions on the best free virus checker that has a downloadable iso? I have a computer illiterate family member that is having issues with sh*t going crazy.

Kaspersky and Bitdefender both have free isos available and they are the best contenders in this category. After that you can do a scan with Malwarebytes on the running system, if you get that far.

Does either require a network connection to update the database?

Yes. I don't think they update the iso that often with the latest definitions.

Thanks for all the links. We were able to check with 3 of the bootable DVDs. Found a handful of infections but nothing horrible. Along the way we discovered that the OS drive is stuck in PIO mode. So far no luck getting that back to DMA on this older XP system.

Update - got that fixed thanks to this thread: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=255021
