That means if you'll ever need to do clean install then you'll have to go back to W8 and repeat the procedure unless you got an iso of W8.1 somehow.

I would prefer a clean install rather then 3 hours for an upgrade that might or might not work.

Except to remove key, you have to use command: "slmgr /cpky" then (not sure if needed) "slmgr /rearm" and finally enter your Windows 8 cd key and activate.

 

You know I'm starting to miss service packs. This new upgrade mechanism is just not quite right IMO. It will drive me nuts if I wasted over 8 hours to upgrade and then found it failed in the end. It seems that clean install from the ISO is the only option for me.

 

Tell me about it, my friend spent one day to install 8, all drivers and applications, then 8.1 just to find out, that he was unable to login to Windows live account, he did not want in the first place. So I gave him 8.1 to install it "illegally" and he was done within a few moments. I do not get it, why MS denies users to use ISO, size is the same.

 

This recommendation comes from someone who calls himself a Linux expert who uses any opportunity to utter slander against MS. Why would anybody bother to write a tutorial on how to upgrade from windows 8 to 8.1 if his final recommendation is not to use either of them...
Windows 8 is a great OS, light years ahead of any Linux distros which if anything they are still barely in the single digit percentage of users worldwide.

My statement reflects a fact in a precise context, namely a Linux expert who advises users not to use Windows 8 or 8.1 as he deems them failure. You are using the term 'bashing' which is more appropriate to characterize Mrkvonic articles/tutorials about MS products.

 

I'm with you. It's the best OS I've used.

 

I'll say that to any Windows OS that has AppLocker in the Pro version. For now, I consider 8 (or 8.1) to be just a new OS by Microsoft with some improvements.

C'mon, give me AppLocker already!

 

I had a dreadful experience trying to upgrade from Win 8 to Win 8.1. Actually I'm still with Win 8 because, incredible as it may sound, Samsung still hasn't got its act together (hasn't updated drivers for display adapters) resulting in a black screen when trying to boot into Windows 8.1.

Many people are complaining, and as much as it is tempting to blame MS, Samsung is the only company with botched upgrades (there are a few cases with some models from Dell and HP Pavillion). As for me, as I mentioned several times Win 8 is absolutely flawless as it is, hence I can wait to upgrade when the time is right.

I would advise anybody running a late model from Samsung to refrain from upgrading to Win 8.1 without a proven backup image as you might find yourself with an unbootable system. Other reported collateral damage was reduced battery life for a single charge, display brightness dimming without any reason, boot errors, touch pad not working... A real debacle.

I think the problems arise when the computer has two graphics systems, the integrated Intel HD and another NVIDIA or AMD card.

 

You are right on my Samsung notebook Intel has a new graphic driver but AMD is still in beta, and unfortunately as I mentioned earlier there are other problems associated with recently released Samsung machines.

 

Can't you the driver from the video chipset manufacturer or Windows update, instead of the one from Samsung which most likely is outdated?

 

Actually it is the AMD catalyst video driver that creates the main problem. The latest version is still in beta, so I prefer to wait.

 

Every driver is basically a beta driver, because there are always issues, just because it gets marked as final it does not guarantee anything.

 

Would this also affect a 5-6 year old Samsung monitor? I'm in Windows 8 and I'm having a horrible time with my home built desktop. Sometimes the monitor doesn't wake as I have it set to shut off after 10 min. The only fix I know is to press the reset button. I've had 2-3 crashes this week since updating to AMD's latest 13.9 driver to play the still unstable Battlefield 4. I don't even have Intel's graphics drivers installed for my i5-4670K.
