    To all,

I am debating with one of my resellers who states that there is no proof that shows adding a 3rd party security product improve the security of Windows 8/8.1?

He believes that Defender is strong enough to stop Virus and Malware.

He states:The more I delve into this whole business, the stranger it gets. To date, not a single major vendor - not one - has publically refuted Microsoft's claim that no additional security product is needed. There are even bounties.

Doesn't anybody else find this at least mildly curious?

    What are your thoughts?

I agree, but this is Essentials.
They have since come out with Defender, and there is no data showing actual proof.

The 'How to Geek' page was originally posted at the beginning of October. Since then I bet the same amount of people still use MSE/Defender.

Personally I don't think MSE/Defender is as bad as is it is painted and that a lot of the remarks were perhaps taken out of context at the time. It surely has a place in its field and by perhaps spending more time actually fighting malware and working with other agencies to this end, it is a way more productive thing to be doing instead of trying to climb up and down the av rankings treadmill.

I also had a sneaking suspicion that Microsoft by 'suggesting' users try other products may have been trying to avoid another situation like the browser choice fiasco.

    His reply:

And I've noticed, you've just done it again. The howtogeek article you just linked in your above post talks about MSE, and is another example of cut-and-paste journalism that was never substantiated by an actual quote. Most sites repeating the piece later retracted it.

The second article was written in spring 2012, and only touched on the similarities between MSE and Defender, without looking at all at the Win8 security as a whole.

If this is the best you can do, after all this time and all this discussion, then all you've managed to prove is that you are at best, lacking in the basic facts to back up.

After doing research it is all text, you need 3rd party but no real tests were done. I sent him to Eicar to download some samples and nothing! Defender blocks it all.

    Does anyone have real proof!
