Why not just use CCleaner or Dban? I use CCleaner and it has been working FINE for me. And haven't ever needed to DBan my computer ever.

Sometimes it just feels good to Dban away rather then ccleaner, at least once in a while perhaps its just my paranoia speaking! still unsure if choosing Fast option works even if it does take a whole day. Feels like it does a full format with some extras.

Is it not possible however ccleaner misses data that maybe stored on the other empty or end of the hdd which may not get used at all ? I assume perhaps wrong on this but choosing wipe free space, most will not do this since it takes endless hours otherwise....

I tried this Zer0 and its fast and neat, since I use 35gutt pass on ccleaner and I have no 'history option' set on firefox, I am running a deep scan on recuva software, I want to see just how good ccleaner and privazer and Zer0 really are, ill pop back and let people know the results if anyone even cares lol

got recuva results back and it found no web cache/pictures or any such history no word or any files.

So ccleaner with 35pass complex overwrite and Zer0 do a great job making it virtually impossible to recover anything from a pc once deleted from recycle bin or ccleaner run :)

    35 pass is overkill.

One pass is enough, more is purely theoretical (and waste of time + drive lifespan imo). What one actually needs to worry about is this: http://www.dban.org/node/35

Being portable, Zer0 can be run on servers where any glitch with the server OS could be disastrous (or at least a big PITA to restore an image). Imagine an email server going down :ouch:

Zer0 is good for this, as most servers aren't "used" but occasionally have files that need to be deleted securely, on them.

Although I have run Privazer on Server 2008 R2 with no ill effects. Still Zer0 is quick and easy for server duty.

CCleaner has a portable version as well, but doesn't it only support free space or entire drive? How does that replace shredding any file/folder you want?

I just noticed there are 4 options for downloading. Didn't see the differences in the Details section. What the difference between .exe, nork.exe, .zip, and lite.exe?

"NoRK NoRK / Zip Portable (Zip) / Lite Lite (no sponsors)" - between Download and SUMo

RK means RelevantKnowledge, which the default installer includes with other sponsors.

More than that, it's nonsense. By definition.
Gutmann made the combination of 35 passes for all different kinds of hard disk encoding, used in the 90's.
1.4MB floppy disks, early hard disks, other storage disks, they all stored data differently/used different encoding techniques.
So for wiping data with different kinds of encoding used over the last 25/30 years, Gutmann developed 35 wiping methods so you'd be able to wipe all kinds of drives/disks with one program.
Using a wiping technique that's developed for data encoding used on a 1.4MB floppy, on your SATA HDD, is always nonsense.
    As Gutmann wrote himself;
