Avira still install Ask toolbar...screens below are from installation few minutes ago from installation pack downloaded about 40 min ago. If you choose "express mode" while installation you probably even don't know that you will have Ask in system

If you don't remove the check marks from the boxes what do you expect?

Besides that, there's no such thing as an express install at this location. I always use the custom install. And believe or not, I'm not that blind that I wouldn't know if I have the Ask toolbar installed or not. Those files are not in the Avira directories in Program Files or AppData. I also have the paid version, not the free one.

It was there up to version 2013, in Free & Paid versions.......

In version 2014, if you opt out the installation of the Avira SearchFree Toolbar Ask crapware, then your Pc will remain clean from the ask garbage.

    I know that, but I'm using 2014.

That's what I've been saying the whole time. Some people don't seem to believe it though.

I have the full installation on Windows 8 and it is running flawlessly, my perception is that it is even lighter than Windows Defender. In the past, with older versions I had problems of web slowdowns and conflicts.

This is the first time I've installed the web guard part. I do notice a little bit of a lag, but it isn't dramatic, so I'm going to leave it turned on for the extra protection.

I just installed Avira free and installed the toolbar because I want the webguard. Are you guys saying that you CAN get the webguard now without installed the Ask crapware? If so, can I just uninstall it? I actually don't even have the toolbar enabled in Firefox or Explorer and web filtering is working.

    Thanks!

We are talking about the paid versions.
In free, you have to install the crapware in order to get the webguard.

Officially you have to install the Ask toolbar to get the web guard working. However, if you dig around a little at raymond.cc he has a simple registry hack that will enable you to install the web guard without the Ask junk.

I tried it out to see if it really works, and it does. I have the paid version, but I installed the freebie out of curiosity. This registry hack has been on his site for a long time, I'm surprised that Avira hasn't patched their code so it doesn't work.

I don't know, I have the Antivirus Suite version.

7Anon says you don't need to do this for the paid versions. OTOH, I still have the registry change and it doesn't do any harm, so it may not be a bad idea to merge one of those reg files (there's two, one for x86 and one for x64).

I had that once, but it hasn't happened again since then.

I also noticed that it's been updating like crazy the past two days. Yesterday I think I had 8 or 9 updates, one of them alone downloaded 26 files, today I had one that downloaded 24 files. It might be new engines, but since I can never remember the version number of the last one, I'm not sure.

Yes, it was set at every two hours by default (I have the Antivirus Suite version). I think free it's every six hours?

Good to know. Thank you for your response and sorry about my delayed response. I am looking to try out some av's again that I have not run in awhile. Avira is one of them.

    Cheers.
