SuRun in windows xp pro

Hello,

I have setup SuRun as suggested in this thread https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=196737&page=1

However after converting my previously admin priveleged account to limited with surun my windows settings have disappeared. eg back to win2k classic look along with other prefs like folder options.

Also my startup items do not work and i have to start them manually.

Am i missing something? as the tutorial shows the normal settings retained ie backdrop etc

Does the lack of a system tray icon suggest something?

I've used SuRun ever since tlu started that thread. I've installed it on several systems and never had that problem, but it definitely sounds like something went pear-shaped with your system. Hopefully you have a restore point, image, or whatever if all else fails.

You may want to log into your admin account and uninstall SuRun and see if everything reverts back. Then have a look at this tutorial provided by Wilders member mrkvonic. It may be a bit more straightforward than reading through that thread.

I did follow that tutorial and ended up in manual launch everything.

Did you have your startup items work automatically after the first reboot?

 

Yes, no problems there and no settings changed, etc.

Here's a real quick and dirty guide:

Make another admin account in addition to the one you are using.

Log out and log in to the new admin account.

Make your original account a limited user.

Install SuRun. Open the settings and add your account that is now limited to the SuRunners group.

Make sure to check Administrators are owners of files, etc, which are created (not sure what it says in English, it's on the last tab at the very bottom).

Also check never ask Administrators to become members of the SuRun group.

If you check the box to show advanced settings as well (it's at the bottom left under the button recommended settings for home users) you can look through everything. It's all pretty much self-explanatory. For example, you might not be seeing the tray icon because it's an option (on the last tab) to not show it. I have it to show for all users. It's handy because it gives you the priviledge status of what's running (green limited, red admin).

Try it again and see what happens.

I have tried it again but still the same problems.

The only thing i dont understand in your guide is make sure the files created are administrator.
What files are those?

I created a new user "admin" and changed my "user" to limited.
the "admin" name is not a problem is it?

 

No problem. I think you should have left the original administrator account alone, instead of changing it to a limited one.

 

OK, I found out what it is in English.

"Set 'Administrators' instead of 'Object creator' as default owner for objects created by Administrators."

If you don't set this, processes (or people) with limited rights could change certain things in the registry created under elevated priviledges (or something to that effect). Better to take the recommendation and set that.

The name shouldn't make any difference.

Concering your startups, do you happen to have Sandboxie installed? See this post on the SuRun English-speaking forum. Could be some other security software throwing a monkey wrench in the gears, but I have no idea what you have installed on your system. You can see in that guy's list of failed services that themes was the very first one, that would explain your Windows 9.x look.

Here's a link to the beginning of the English forum. You could take a look through there and see if someone else had the same problem. The thread above is one I found.

Hopefully that will shed some light on the problem.

 

Ok I can look at that when i get it working since its a tightening of security which may make things more difficult to get working in its current state.

No sandboxie just KIS and Outpost FW.
Both have surun in the trusted zone and disabled when i installed surun.
