So, what media do you use?
Do you have a recovery partition on another hard drive?

    Hi Stigg,

I just successfully booted into the "Recovery Media" on my Windows 8.1, which was created on Windows 8. Though, I didn't restore the image, but I believe it will restore the image, if need be.

    Best regards,

    Mohamed

    Hi Stigg,

I use the "bootmenu" as "Recovery Media". The "Recovery Media" files can be on the OS partition or on another partition.

    Best regards,

    Mohamed

    OK. Very nice. Thanks Mohamed.
Will I see a boot menu when I am booting up?

    Hi Stigg,

You will. For this happen, you need to set it up one time with a Freeware program called, EasyBCD. From then on, if a new version of AX64 comes out, then just replace the older "Recovery Media" directory with the newer "Recovery Media" directory.

The instructions are posted in this thread, just do the search for EasyBCD and my user name, "aladdin".

    Best regards,

    Mohamed

    Thanks for the info, Mohamed.

But I guess for now I will have to find a Windows 8 machine and make a CD/DVD as making those files won't work for me, will they?

PS: Didn't you mention that a previous version worked fine on Windows 8.1?

Mohamed, it is possible to repost the instructions or provide me with a link to them? I couldn't find them.

    Thanks,

    Stigg

Greets again everyone and in particular Isso! Many thanks on this beta.

Some results to share with everyone.

    Installed/Reboot 1.3.7 over 1145. I'm on windows 8.0 (no sp)

Remade the Recovery Media to a USB Flash Drive with 1.3.7 beta.

No problem whatsoever creating the media on the pen.

    Recovery Flash Media works flawless

Speed of the restore increase noticeable! Very fluid.

As everyone can plainly see the AX64 TM backup/snapshot browser remains 1.2.0.7, at least in number and so far functions normally.

It might be of interest to note i did not try to make DVD Media yet however on standard OEM Windows 8.0 it did prpoerly make an ISO

    "Recovery Media Creation Completed Successfully"

    Regards EASTER

PS. Considering another new external drive this week to dock TM backups on. A WD 2TB w/USB 2.0 + 3.0 for 99.00

You only need to make ISO, this can be used as "bootmenu" and/or to burn it on USB/CD/DVD.

    Hi Stigg,

    You need two things:

    1. EasyBCD, which you can download from here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/EasyBCD.shtml

    2. The ISO for "Recovery Media" for AX64 and/or any other imaging programs you own. This "Recovery Media" can also be of virus programs and partition programs too. But to make it simple, we will just start with ISO of AX64.

Once you have the above two, then extract the ISO somewhere. I have mine on "D" drive/partition, under D: > WinPE > AX_Recovery.

AX64 automatically extracts to AX_Recovery, so you have to just move the "AX_Recovery' directory to D: > WinPE. Or just extract it under D: > WinPE.

Then use the third menu of EasyBCD on the left called, "Add New Entry" and third menu on the bottom called, "WinPE". Browse down to AX_Recovery > Sources and pick "Boot.wim". Give a desired name, such as "AX64 Time Machine" and press "Add Entry". You are done for life.

CAUTION: Never use the second menu on Windows 8 or 8.1 of EasyBCD called, "Edit Boot Menu" as it will mess up your beautiful looking "bootmenu" on Windows 8 or 8.1. The "bootmenu" will still work but it will look like Windows 7 "bootmenu".

    Best regards,

    Mohamed

    Hi Isso,

1.) Creation Recovery Media was successful
2.) First attempt (Before Bitdefender uninstalled) goes without problems to 100%, the cursor was already turning around, but no reboot within 10 minutes. So I have to reset and restoring was successfully
3.)Second attempt (with installed Bitdefender) was frozen at 25%
4.) After that restoring with Recovery Media was successful

Today I update to 8.1 and then report my experiences.

Actually I reverted back to the "dead" FDISR several weeks ago. I did not have any problems with AX64 and even installed it on my wife's machine. After reading of the problems some of you were having with AX64 I just decided to wait until it is more "mature" but I am still recommending it to everyone I know. (Also I missed the FDISR pre-Boot screen).

Yes, I believe that AX64 "carries the torch" to some extent but these are two different type programs with two different type technologies. FDISR was not a true imaging program. AX64 is faster and takes up much less disk space. FDISR, with the help of our Greek friend to make it work in Win7, is more reliable but I am eagerly awaiting the day that AX64 it is the equal to FDISR in dependability.

ON all but one machine, I've actually removed FDISR and switched to AX64 with no regrets

So far it's great. On my Sager laptap where hot restores have been troublesome, I've done 3 so far and they are letter perfect.

I really put hot restore to the test on the Win 7 x64 machine.

I did a hot back to a baseline from Sept 12, and then back to current. What impressed me was how the system has changed.

    Between the two

Creative audio software was added. (big)
    various audio playback software added.
Adobe Acrobat XI Pro patched. (Huge change)
Emet and .Net 4.0 added (also huge)
    130 Windows updates applied

That AX64 was able to undo all that, and then replace it as a hot restore is amazing.

Also I did test a cold restore using the original Recovery CD. Worked fine.

    Isso and company WELL DONE

    Pete

Does this mean if I have an earlier version installed, I should install on top of it or does it mean I need to uninstall the older version and do a fresh install of 1.3.7?

MB, you can always install on top of the previous version (especially if you wanna maintain your existing backup chain without starting a new one). If the chain isn't important, an unINSTALL/INSTALL is just fine.
