Don't forget that Microsoft has plenty of knowledgable people in this area from their acquisitions, e.g., GCad, Sybari and Giant, which are the ones that come to mind. And as you say, they know their OS inside out. MSE is one of the smoothest running AVs I've ever tried. Used it for a couple of years and never had a problem with it.

would be interesting to see Microsofts' info on number machines infected and by what and which security program,if any,the infected machines were running:-think expired products/not up to date products should be excluded from those figures, that way the actual protection offered in the real world by up to date products of vendors could be compared

AV Test (what's with the hyphen anyway, it's just a Germanism yet they want to be global) would go mad at MS rightly taking their job. Sure, AVT, 99.51% is the same as 99.99%. Just round them all. Everyone can reach over %99 detection rate as long as it's not a zero-day test. Don't show user-dependent cases in the real world section either. Forget that Eset has its advanced heuristics disabled by default. By the way, good job abolishing removal tests.

On another site there was a discussion about "best" AV's, one guy said he worked in IT and was responsible for hundreds of computers. Said when he got infections that he had tried many big-name AV's and they failed to handle the infections but MSE did the job. Said MSE was definitely his favorite AV.

Not that far-fetched. No one knows exactly how good or bad it is, but it must be better than at least a few tested in AVT and AVC. Eset (to a greater extent) is another AV that underachieves in tests, but seemingly does quite a bit better in real life. Their online scanner wouldn't have been recommended if its detection was really that mediocre, so testing companies are getting some things wrong.
