I wonder how they make money with a free VPN.

If it is safe and secure, why pay for another provider?

Yes, TOR is free, but I think it is very different. I have read here at wilders that the only fact that you are using TOR, the spotlight shine on you.

Someone sugested that is better use TOR through a VPN tunnel.

I used to use TOR for privacy, but I never entered the DW, and it is slow.

Now I pay for a VPN, it is much better and faster, I can use flash (I supose, at least) without compromising my privacy.

If get privite VPN is ok, I can change and save some bucks...

 

Maybe they're just testing.

Or maybe it's a private VPN, and they need more users for crowding.

I wouldn't use it as it is right now. They do not provide any documentation about their protocols, nor do they provide any information about their company. At the bottom is says it's free to download. It doesn't say it is free to continue to use. I would say there is a catch to it. Its probably a trial. It may very well be free, but I don't intend to install it to find out. I would be too worried it's a honeypot.

 

It is on the pirate bay. That is where i saw it first. Are they honeypotters?

what does within it mean.? So it is adware?

 

Sure is and maybe more according to VirusTotal (2 hits on website, 12 on setup).

 

Why use a product of no value? If something has no value why do you think it would be valuable to you when the creators are just giving it away.

 

You never used free software?

 

Why is free software free? because they have pay software they want you to buy, so it has up-sell value.

 

That may be true in the Windows world, but not in Linux.

Why do people code Linux for free? I'm guessing that it's mostly because they want to contribute, and/or to be recognized and get better reputation, maybe even to put on their CVs.

 

Linux even makes money for some people, Ubuntu new Amazon Shopping Service integrated right into the OS. OpenSuse is a sponsored company that is making money. Some offer pay-for support, and other things. VPN's are even more suspect, why would someone pay out for 1GB servers and risk their own reputation for nothing?

 

Your comparison with free software is irrelevant .

A VPN-business lives off selling bandwidth .
Bandwidth costs money on a monthly basis,
'giving away' some program for free doesn't .

If you give away bandwidth for free, income has to come elsewhere .
That's right, YOU are being sold .

There are no good free VPN's, they are all selling you, somehow .
Don't be cheap, just pay the swedish VPN's 40-50SEKR ..

I generally don't trust free VPN services, except for short free trials.

SecurityKISS does offfer a free trial that's unlimited in time, as long as you use it often enough. But it's too limited in bandwidth and daily throughput to be useful for much.

I only use free VPN services when the benefit (no money trail) outweighs the risk (honeypot of some sort).

 

there's lots of good freeware apps in windows too - NirSoft, SysInternals, etc etc. i've collected hundreds of free and portable apps.

as pointed out though, they don't have to pay for much bandwidth compared to a VPN.

 

I have pulled quite a few Gig through my connection in the past 48 hours. All fully legit files but several were a couple of Gig each. That is one user "sucking" 5-8 Gig through the pipe in 1 or 2 days. Who pays for that bandwidth? In my case its my annual membership fee. I can't see anyone doing that for free times tons of users. What business model would fly in the face of that cost/loss? Just doesn't make sense. Maybe a hundred or a few hundred meg a day for a trial, but beyond that a "free lunch" scares me.

 

The free option for SecurityKISS allows 300 MB per day, and they reduce bandwidth.

lol guys, just don't use it, you would be dumb to use it.

 

recently I've seen quite a few of these free VPN services pop up, but I don't trust them expect maybe riseup.net's VPN because they are a known privacy advocacy organization.

before I started using a paid VPN service I used to use Hotspot Shield, which is free but ad supported. I haven't used it for several years now, but at the time I did it added some toolbar or Window to run ads on your desktop while the service was running. It was annoying but fair enough for a free service.
