So grateful that AX64 has filled the FD-ISR gap for me.

I thought I was going to have to keep my old XP computer in service because it would enable me to use a few legacy programs that won't work on Windows 7. Not sure if they'll work in XP mode either.

So, I'm wondering... since I have 4 drives: 1 for OS and programs; 2 for data; I'm thinking about using the 4th drive (160 GB) as follows:
    • Delete all software on my old XP computer, except my XP sp3 OS and the 3 or 4 legacy programs;
    • Use AX64 to backup the trimmed down drive;
    • Restore to the 4th drive on my new Windows 7 computer.
    1. Would that work to "clone" that old PC's OS and software on the 4th drive?

    2. Would I then be able to boot to that drive when necessary?

    Hoping so...

    Hi Chamlin,

    I'm glad you're glad!

To answer your question - you can backup that drive using AX64 and it would work on the original hardware that you made the backup from. However, if you're using it in another machine (like the new Windows 7 PC you speak of), it will not work as AX64 doesn't currently support restoring to dissimilar hardware.

The current release of Realcopy, however, does support restoring to dissimilar hardware. Unfortunately its current iteration does not support Windows XP. So it also would not work. :'(

A final solution from us to your situation should be available in a few months, when full integration of Realcopy and AX64 Time Machine is complete (aka ;) Timecopy) - this will allow restore to dissimilar hardware and also include support for Windows XP. When this happens, your scenario above should be quite doable.

    Cheers,

    Waj

Thanks for the clarity, Waj, and a few months (or whatever time it takes to manifest) is not at all too long to wait. Timecopy! Nice.

To all, in case my situation dictates that I MUST try to backup my current XP drive and restore it to dissimilar hardware (an open drive in my Win7 Pro system), are there any good existing solutions that you know of?

    Thanks again, Waj,
    Chamlin

Hi Chamlin! With the length of this existing thread, you might wanna pose that question elsewhere in the Forums.

    Hi Waj,
Is the name Timecopy written in stone? If so, perhaps we could address future dialog for the upcoming new version on a new thread. What do you think? :)

Someone in the thread mentioned the legendary software "FDISR" and said AX64 is the best thing since the original FDISR.

I have now used the latest version of AX64 constantly for a couple of weeks and I must say that I am beginning to concur. My criteria for a good restore software is that it is robust and never fail for me. When I say "never" I mean never. :)

I have jumped back and forth in the snapshots I´ve made at least 15 times. The restore process is fast and simple. I have installed quite alot of software to test and uninstalled them by jumping back to a previous snapshots. So far AX64 has not failed once, and that is very promising. Not many imaging/snapshot software that I have tested has been this consistent in trouble free restorations!

I like the fact that with this version it works well with Macrium which I use as last defense until I truly trust AX64 (it will take about a hundred consistent trouble-free restores in my world :) )

    Good work Isso!

Which build do you use? 1120, 1133 or 1145?

As far as it goes for me either 1133 or 1145 work well with hot restores (cold restores have never, ever been an issue, even with 1120) but only when I make sure that all security apps are disabled before kicking off the restore.

    HTH?

I have been using 1120 without issue since I reduced AppGuards protection level to Medium when doing a restore. Not a single failure in months and dozens of jumps. Cold restores never caused a problem for me and now hot is problem free as well.

AX64 RealTime Copy! (Unified hybrid imaging)
    AX64 RealCopy Advanced!
    RealCopy Hybrid Time Machine!
    RealCopy Rapid Time Machine!

Just daydreaming with some Namedropping. Brain strain is stretching the neurals.

Full integration of these two technologies as i see it is destined to turn out something even more multi-automated and solid. So relieved AX64 is going forward. All this is more than i anticipated.

The next upgrade and project just ahead n thereafter has some of us nearing fever pitch wirh anticipation.

    All The Best, EASTER.

Sorry for my ignorance but can some one explain the difference between hot and cold restore.

    Thanks

Hot restore you do from with in Windows. Only takes one reboot after the restore.

Cold restore is booting to a recovery disk, restoring from the recovery disk and the booting back into the system

I have watched this thread off and on for quite a while and I am now ready to give AX64 a try. I do have ShadowProtect installed and I gather that SP and AX64 do not get along so SP will have to be uninstalled. I would really like to run AX64 along with SP so Is there any reason I can't just run SP from the recovery CD? Is that correct or does SP actually need to be installed in to function?

No. You can easily run ShadowProtect from the recovery CD. Works fine.

I am not sure you are correct. For sure there is a problem with ShadowDefender, but I don't think there is a problem with ShadowProtect. Could someone confirm please?

    Hello,

The compatibility issue is listed on the AX64 Forum here: -http://ax64.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/202273-compatibility-with-storagecraft-shadowprotect

I can confirm that, ShadowProtect from CD works fine, slower to create a mirror image backup which you would expect, but works awesomely!

Many thanks for your information, sukarof, I use 1145 on Windows 8 64 bit.

And it´s little bit off topic, Stockholm is a very nice town; i have enjoyed it last year.:)
